I have hundreds of photos like these. I don't know what this phenomenon is called - when someone paints over graffiti but they get this kind of effect. I'm fascinated by the choices they make in doing this utterly mundane task, and the fact that it results in these lovely abstract paintings. What went on in their mind? Was this the closest match they could find, or just the only paint they had? Why do some people paint big blocks and some try to just cover up the lines? Why do they so rarely repaint the whole section of the wall? And my art history nerd instantly sees the abstract expressionism and process painting parallels. Many of these have a strong #clyffordstill
vibe, like this one.
Does anyone know what this phenomenon is called? I'd love to know.
