On an afternoon last winter, I emerged out of the salon with nails painted black. I loved them. I felt edgy and irreverent and thought they looked good with the olive green wool dress and black boots I had on.
So off I swooshed to meet a friend. She checked out my goth look and said, "Don’t you think you are too conventional for this? I really cannot associate you with yellow, green or blue nail varnish!” A lot has happened since then. We aren't friends anymore. Though I miss our laughathons, I realised after that encounter, and more, that maybe she had pigeonholed me as a person, often accusing me of being fake after she read some of my published articles (what I write on my personal space may not be similar to what I write in the capacity of a senior luxury writer. There are things I don't wear, but for the sake of fashion, I have to give them a fair and objective chance) and hence, I told her to move on if she wasn't happy with me.
I also told her one thing. That just because I didn't do something in a way, why would it be I would never. Like, sporting a stole in a swish way, or talk about art, or delving into the finer nuances of design. Don't we evolve with age and experience? Should I be judged if I follow my heart that might change its tenor frequently? Likes, dislikes, passions... Can't they be fleeting? Why should we write down rules for anything (well I haven’t told that to Bono!). I scribble what comes to my mind and whenever it does. I don’t really plan a day ahead as to what I want to wear. I put together a look impromptu. I skip fancy launch parties at times because all I want is to lie beside a sleeping Bono and Netflix it out. I wear my glasses if I want to, even though I might not look as chic as a pin.
I wasn’t like this... But, that is a story for a different time altogether…
For now, I’ll just say that mostly I don't paint my nails. But when I do, the colour will depend totally on my mood...
