This has to be the most aggressive bay window on the planet.
And yes, this was certainly a magical moment as those Crepuscular rays shone directly on the carving of Triton, the original Merman 🧜♂️ This bay window and the arch below form the ‘Arch of Triton’; one of the most detailed architectural features of the Pena Palace. There are a bunch of lofty theories as to what is really going on here, but the simplest theory is;
Part man, part fish, Triton symbolizes the creation of the world. In this representation specifically, he is straddling the aquatic world below, and the terrestrial world above, as he stands in the middle shell (an island representing earth) and grows out of a tree trunk.
It’s believed King Ferdinand had given an order when the palace was being designed, to include allegories and iconography that would revive ancient themes of Portuguese culture;
in this case, a reference to a famous Portuguese poem from 1554, depicting Triton on a Nearby beach chilling in a shell, melded with regional folklore about the monster of Pena.
I wish we still constructed buildings that told stories like this and held secrets in their details; codes, that may no longer be decipherable as time goes on. 🤓
