Hi, I’m Kiara Mystery, an author with a new fiction book, Imperfection: a number of short stories told by the victims of a serial killer. Below is 14 year old Olivia’s story.
I remember pulling my rucksack firmly onto my shoulders as I stumbled through the woods. The ground had been wet beneath my feet and my shoes were quickly covered in mud and leaves – I knew mum would be annoyed. I normally stuck to the well-lit main road, but I was too tired and hungry to care. I had also not bothered to bring a coat to school this morning and my blazer did little to keep out the cold.
If I had spotted him, I could have survived. I could have screamed, or run – I was nearly at the main road. Instead, I had my earphones in, and turned up the top charts as loud as they could go as I walked into the under path. Like a gazelle moments before a lion attack, I didn’t stand a chance.
I didn’t even know he was there until I felt an arm around my throat.
My earphones were ripped out as I was knocked to the floor, my phone bounced on the ground next to me. I was small for my age and couldn’t even resist once he had pinned my arms back, pressed me against the wall and held me up by the throat.
His empty brown eyes looked into mine as he watched me gasp for breath, his gloved hand firmly clamped around my throat, stopping any air reaching my lungs. His muscles barely strained as I flailed, kicking my legs weakly, pulling against his arm. He was smiling at my mouth, open in a silent scream. I didn’t have to look at his face for too long as the pain from my lungs, desperately screaming for oxygen, overwhelmed me and everything slowly faded to black.
I watch from above as he holds my throat until he is sure I am gone. He flips out a knife and I look away as he slowly carves a broken circle into my forehead.
