I want a crispr baby.i don't care who says it's evil or wrong.the creator gave us free will and the base knowledge to grow new developments that will grant us healthier happier lives.i was born with a fontanelle that never closed,my left foot is larger, my heart murmur turned into Vivaldi and Paganini, my left eye is weak but I am a sharp shooter with my right eye......all these things I was made to feel shame for at one point but overcame my flaws. I developed all of my insecurities and had to spend a decade longer growing up because this world is preoccupied with appearances and that carried me.My offspring are perfect now because I painstakingly found genetic partners to make up for those flaws.if we can support parents that parade around non- verbal, drooling, brain- damaged children in wheelchairs with feeding tubes and NO chance at independence then why can't we celebrate and laud the mothers willing to trust that they can give their babies the best of what this world has to offer.its not at toys r us.its inside is.#gattica #crispr #iwillcarryyouallmylife
Epiphanies often happen when we least expect them. Einstein had predicted the existence of gravitational waves in 1916 but in the 1960s, an off-hand comment in a class inspired physicist Rainer Weiss to hypothesize a way to actually measure gravitational waves. He originally hadn't given the comment much thought until about a year later when he had an epiphany and "worked the whole summer on the idea." One scientist has a promising idea to solve two major problems at once - removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and feeding people and animals - by breeding a “super plant.” But her project, urgent though it is, might be unnecessarily slow for political reasons. • Due to concerns about political opposition to genetically modified organisms (GMOs), she has chosen to genetically alter plants the old-fashioned way, through selective breeding, rather than through a newer, faster technology, the gene-editing tool CRISPR. • Joanne Chory, a plant biologist and geneticist, is director of the Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology laboratory at the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences and a Breakthrough Prize recipient. She created an initiative called “Harnessing Plants for the Future” to develop a super plant that will both provide food and store carbon dioxide in its roots. • A gene-editing tool like CRISPR allows for much faster cross-breeding than once was possible, transferring special characteristics such as enhanced suberin production from one plant to another. Yes, the resulting organism would be genetically modified, but so are virtually all the other organisms we consume. • The stakes could not be higher, and we don’t have time to spare. Glaciers are melting. Sea levels are rising. Coral reefs are dying. And agriculture, our food security, is in peril. We need solutions sooner rather than later. Totally different type of post today! 95% of my time is spent thinking about science 🤓 I just joined a thesis lab which I’ll stay with for the next 4-5 years, working on a specific research project. I’m just getting started on this project; Monday I attempted a genetic modification of some cells using CRISPR, and today I’m running a PCR and a gel to see if that was successful. I absolutely love what I do, even though being a grad student is stressful and busy. This summer I’m trying to figure out how to maintain a balance between fitness and lab life- how to pass my quals in a few weeks, keep moving my project forward, apply for grants, spend time with my family, and stay healthy 😅

Do you ever wish you could just disappear from an awkward or dangerous situation? Sir John Pendry's concept of an invisibility cloak could make this fantasy a reality. John devised a way to bend light around an object rendering it invisible. He found that cloaking is similar to creating a mirage: light is bent in such a way that our brain misinterprets what we are seeing. I love my CRISPR necklace from @sciencejewelry1824 ! I don't wear a lot of jewelry, but I was intrigued by this elegant interpretation of an amazing tool I use almost every day. I worked in the field of gene editing in the B.C. (before CRISPR) era, and what used to take months or years now takes weeks. Read an article on MIT Tech Review that scientists have linked hundreds of genes to intelligence. This meant that we could read the DNA of a child and get a notion of how intelligent they will be. This made me realise that the prospects of designer babies is kind of inevitable if we are advancing at this rate. And discussions about gene editing should happen now instead of waiting for the technology to arrive like in the case of drones and autonomous cars. To provide a glimpse into just how complex this problem would be, take a look at this hypothetical dinner table question by Tim Urban. “It’s the year 2045 and you are ready to have a child. You head to the clinic to extract your gametes and prepare to conceive just the right child. In the consultation, they tell you that for the price you’re able to pay, you can’t afford a detailed personality design—all you’ll be able to affect are The Big 3 Traits: 1)IQ—One’s intelligence level and ability to understand complex concepts 2)EQ—One’s emotional intelligence level—how good they’ll be at understanding people and human nature 3)Grit—a broad trait that relates to work ethic, mental toughness, and the ability to persist in the face of hardship Each of these traits can be assigned on a percentile scale of 1–100. A score of 100 places your child in the top percent of all humans while a score of 50 would be average. After performing some tests, they explain that you and your partner have enough genetic talent to dole out 250 points among these three traits. If you go for the top IQ and EQ scores of 100 each, that would only leave 50 points left over for grit. So, how would you dole out your 250 points?” For me, I feel that decisions are made at a specific point of time with the best information at that moment. But everything is dynamic and things change. And I find myself changing my answer as I gain new knowledge and experience. Technology like these are going to be commercialised and choices would be provided to give people the illusion of the freedom of choice. Human values changes plus the kid wasn’t given a choice. 🌱 A team of scientists from Purdue University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences used CRISPR/Cas9 (gene-editing technology) to develop a variety of rice that produces over 30% more grain! • The team made mutations to 13 genes associated with the phytohormone abscisic acid, known to play roles in plant stress tolerance and suppression of growth. Of several varieties created, one produced a plant that had little change in stress tolerance but produced over 30% more grain! • The improved rice plants created in these experiments come were from just common research stock. 2018 #PDSoros Fellow Samuel H. Kim (left) was born in New Jersey to immigrant parents from South Korea. His family then moved back to South Korea, where Samuel grew up. At the age of 10, his family moved to Los Angeles where they faced financial and health difficulties. However, through his Christian faith and working at a cardiology clinic, Samuel discovered his passion for medicine and its empowerment of our most vulnerable. At @princeton_university , Samuel developed a novel technology to study epigenetics by combining chemical synthesis with #CRISPR /Cas9 genome targeting, which was published in PNAS. During his MPhil at Cambridge University under the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, Samuel developed a method for rapid and accurate genome synthesis and replacement that was published in Nature.
