---Japan’s Doomsday Cult---
Aum Shinrikyo was a Japanese doomsday cult that was founded by Shoko Asahara in 1984. Born partially blind, Asahara’s manipulative tendencies started at a young age as he used to extort and take advantage of his fellow blind classmates. The group was originally started under the name of Omu Shinsen (Aum Club of Gods and Hermits), as a small spiritual mediation club that primarily appealed to social recluses. But as the years passed, the group grew substantially in size and prominence. By 1989, the group had gained official religious organizational recognition by the Japanese government. It soon became known as the “religion of the elite”, attracting scores of scientists, engineers, and other prominent members of society.
-But the group quickly took a dark turn. By the early 90s, Asahara began identifying himself as the second coming of Christ and experimenting with LSD daily. This combination lead to scores of dangerous cultish behaviors. Such as: extorting followers, constructing a massive compound, instituting strict laws, human experimentation, torture, and most menacing of all, began prophesizing the coming of Armageddon. This lead to the manufacture of arms (thousands of AK47s), illegal drugs (LSD and Methamphetamine), and weaponized nerve/biological agents (Sarin gas, Botulinum Toxin, VX gas, etc.) They also managed to acquire a Russian attack helicopter and began dabbling in nuclear weapon experimentation.
--In 1994 the group began carrying out chemical attacks on the Japanese populace, in an attempt to promote their Armageddon prophesies. They drove around populated cities, spraying weaponized Sarin gas. Luckily enough, they had not perfected their delivery device and the attacks lead to only 8 deaths, instead of the intended thousands. Then on the morning of March 20, 1995 the group carried out their most nefarious attack. They released weaponized Sarin gas on 5 separate packed Tokyo subway trains during the morning work commute. The attack killed 13, seriously injured 54, and wounded another 980. Again, their initial projection of killing thousands failed. Soon after, Asahara was arrested and finally executed in July of 2018
