Free Weight Exercise of the Week: The Squat
Squats are a brilliant exercise that should be a staple of your training plan! They are a compound exercise (meaning that it engages several muscle groups). A few of the benefits of performing the squat (providing they are executed correctly) are;
- Increase the tone and appearance of your physique
- Sculpting your bum and legs - Increase the calories burned (perfect for those looking to drop fat!) during your session
- Improve posture and strengthen the core
- Strengthen your joints and increase bone density
This example which I'm doing is a Barbell Squat. There are so many variations of this exercise that you can do, anyone can squat!

After a few bouts of surgery one of our members returned to the gym to improve her fitness and loose weight. But with no definite goal she wasn’t enjoying the gym. After 5 months of personal training with Russ introducing her to new activities involving weights and cardio along with dietary advice she has made amazing progress!
She has lost fat whilst building up muscle. Her metabolic age and BMI has fallen whilst her BMR has risen. She can even play 18 holes of golf and not be out of tired!
She said, “all in all a great improvement, money well spent.” Keep up the good work!
