After a week away, I am exhausted...physically and mentally, but thank goodness I was able to continue to nourish my body with some real food!
Traveling makes eating well super tough! I know my body dislikes being out of its routine, eating foods I don’t normally eat, and although not every meal was perfection, I’ve come up with a few tips to make eating well while traveling a little easier!
1️⃣ Plan ahead by searching online to find restaurants and markets that offer healthy options in the area you’re headed to. I found @pulpslc
before heading to SLC, knowing it would be a place for me to get fresh, healthy food!
2️⃣ Make a trip to a local grocery store and stock your hotel room fridge with healthy snacks like fruit, nuts, yogurt, cut up veggies and hummus.
3️⃣ Include foods that will help keep your gut doing well like kombucha or other fermented foods.
4️⃣ Stay hydrated! Bring a water bottle from home to make sure you’re sticking to your regular schedule of drinking lots of water throughout the day!
5️⃣ Pack snacks to eat while you’re out and about during the day to ensure you’re fuelling your body regularly!

This unassuming place is operated by only 2 people. Which is usually a crazy thought but it’s tiny inside. There is no menu. No signs. Furthermore no one speaks English. All I knew is that I was there to eat sushi of some sort. I was with a friend who also speaks next to no Japanese, so that wasn’t much help. After taking 2 of 4 seats in the whole place, we somehow communicated with the owners and landed at sushi bowl. Opening the tiny fridge, the husband began to preparing the catch of the day. Today was snapper, scallop, shrimp and my all time favourite, Uni. Decisively sliced and then artfully laid on a bed of sushi rice, the bowl was then handed to his wife. She was busy hand roasting sheets of #nori
which she then crushed to top-off our bowls. Ask most sushi chefs and they will tell you the rice is the most important component and this place had excellent rice. Overall the freshness of the ingredients including freshly grated wasabi made this a great sushi bowl. But more so, there is something added you get in the meal when you can watch the whole thing being prepared with so much care. Great little find. I’m told the place has been there for over 60 years! There are many Michelin restaurants in Kyoto area but for a great sushi bowl at a reasonable price, this is worth a adding to your options. Peruvian cuisine finessed. Being Peruvian National Day they offered a Pisco Sour and Ceviche Masterclass. Nothing sounded better in the 45C heat. We start off sipping straight Pisco then dove into creating our own cocktails. The mad shaking of egg whites, squeezing of limes and drops of bitters ended in a fantastic Pisco Sour. Its one of those drinks where if made well, you’ll have had way too many before realising how drunk you were.
Ceviche is essentially acid-cured (lime juice) raw seafood. Did you know that depending on how you squeeze lime, the flavour of the juice varies hugely? Crazy right?! Squeeze it wrong and it adds too much acid and bitterness. Leche de tigre (tigers milk) the base sauce for ceviche. Ginger, onions, celery, seasoning and my favourite, Chilli are mixed with a light fish stock to create the liquid that the fish cures in. Coya blends varying ingredients to create their own unique flavours, including my favourites black truffle and siracha versions. Seated after class we sample some of the other items on the menu including slow cooked ribs and fish risotto. Overall a GREAT feed and dining experience. I’m told the atmosphere is even more fun at night where most diners continue to Pisco sour the night away at the in-house bar.
