The “bow” of this ship-like futuristic office building juts out freely 40 meters over the river Elbe. An observation deck is located on its roof and can be reached via a public outdoor staircase. After climbing the 140 steps, visitors are rewarded with a stunning view of Elbe and harbor. The name Dockland was chosen based on dock areas in London which have been remodeled to offer space for living and working. The building width is 21m and the length of each floor is 86m. The construction allowing the 47m cantilever of the ‘bow’ is made from a lattice beam system of four steel frames the entire height of the building. This construction was welded in a shipyard opposite the site, transported in one piece over the Elbe with a huge floating crane and attached to the main reinforced concrete structure of the building. The Dockland office building has a dynamic form, a rhomboid constructed from steel and glass cantilevers its fully glazed front facade 47m over the river, using an inclination of 66º and evoking a strong association with a ship form. This shape of the building allows an open series of steps to the land-side, allowing visitors to walk up the building’s 140 steps to a public viewing platform on the rooftop. The attic floor houses a restaurant and roof terrace. The main entrance access to the offices on first to fifth floors is also provided by these stairs and by two glass-walled, inclined elevators following the angle of the stairs. In this modern architectural era staircases occupy a special position and can often totally overshadow the building they are a part of. This is due to the skill at which they have been designed, manufactured and installed. When looking at certain staircases you can clearly see the thought process and how far a designer has stretched their human imagination to create something special. Staircases respond to the type of society for which they were built, they help inform us about the existing state of the arts, fashion and technology. Over time they have become trademarks and famous landmarks, and can always provide someone with a constant source of inspiration. Staircases are one of the strongest transition elements in architecture, they are designed to connect two spaces, whether it is interior to exterior or different interior levels. The positioning of staircases and stairs in a building has always been critical and an important design factor. The positioning of a staircase in a building is becoming ever more important with modern open plan layouts of houses and office spaces. For this Modernist building, the architect was inspired by a theme used in one of his Italian pavilions at a 1954 Zagreb exhibition: that of an inverted pyramid. The lateral facades, much smaller than the principal ones, take on the complex shape of the staircases. The Hotel du Lac was one of the first big hotels built after Tunisia's independence. Hôtel du Lac in Tunis was built in the 1960s by the Lake of Tunis. The ten-story building is unique with its distinctive architecture and concrete construction, an icon of brutalist architecture. By protruding each floor at both ends to a respective room width, this design concept resulted a building that has a top level twice as wide than its ground level.  The construction of the Hôtel du Lac was considered to be a symbol of the arrival of modernity in Tunisia and became one of the tourist attractions of Tunis. In 2013, it was announced that the hotel's owner, the Libyan Arab Foreign Investment Company (LAFICO) plans to demolish the building and decided to build a new luxury hotel in its place. Grit and grandeur coexist seamlessly in Marseille, an exuberantly multicultural port city with a pedigree stretching back to classical Greece and a fair claim to the mantle of France's second city. Once seen as somewhat dirty and dangerous, and lacking the glamour of Cannes or St-Tropez, this black sheep of the Provençal coastline has blossomed in cultural confidence since its 2013 stint as the European Capital of Culture. The addition of a brace of swanky new museums is just the outward sign of an optimism and self-belief that's almost palpable. The old port is the first thing built in the VI century BC, who arrived on the shore of the Bay of the Greeks. Establishing a port on the site of the modern city, they formed a colony called Massalia", which eventually transformed into "Marseille". Gradually, the area around the Old port was built up with industrial, residential and religious buildings. MARSEILLE, France 📷 @rcbtones ...................................................... Marseille, a port city in southern France, has been a crossroads of immigration and trade since its founding by the Greeks circa 600 B.C. At its heart is the Vieux-Port (Old Port), where fishmongers sell their catch along the boat-lined quay. Basilique Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde is a Romanesque-Byzantine church. The reversal of the typical office space floor plan (replacing the opaque core with transparent curtain wall glass perimeter by an open core with the mass strategically opened in the perimeter) responded not only to functional reasons but to the environmental performance and character of the building as well. This building had to respond to the client’s expectation of having an innovation center with a “contemporary look”, but the uncritical search for contemporariness has populated Santiago with glass towers that due to the desert climatic local condition have serious greenhouse effect in interiors. Such towers spend a huge amount of energy in air conditioning. The way to avoid undesired heat gains is not rocket science; it is enough to place the mass of the building on the perimeter, have recessed glasses to prevent direct sun radiation and allow for cross ventilation. Alejandro Aravena of Chile receives the 2016 Pritzker Architecture Prize. He practices architecture as an artful endeavor in private commissions and in designs for the public realm and epitomizes the revival of a more socially engaged architect. A building design in which at least 4 forms of work could be verified: a matrix of formal and informal work crossed by individual and collective ways of encountering people. In addition to that, we thought that face to face contact is unbeatable when one wants to create knowledge, so we multiplied throughout the building the places where people could meet: from the elevator’s lobby with a bench where to sit if you happen to run into somebody that has interesting information to share, to a transparent atrium where you can sneak into what others are doing while circulating vertically, to elevated squares throughout the entire height of the building. Spatially, the building is planned as a series of flexible, sub-dividable spaces positioned around a central multifunctional tiered space, navigated by a grand ‘open’ staircase. The central space is key to controlling the environmental performance of the building, which is uniquely passive, by introducing abundant natural light from a glazed roof into the heart of the plan, feeding each floor plate. In turn automated glazed vents throughout the building envelope introduce cooling air as required at each level throughout day and night, feeding the central stack of the void. The building has a simple rectilinear form, with elevations composed to compliment the Georgian principles of proportion, scale, hierarchy and materiality. A 1200 mm vertical grid, of precast concrete fins, articulates the contrasting materials of brick and glass, whilst floor slabs are expressed in the same material ensuring the stagger of the floor plates is abundantly clear to even the casual passer-by. Terraces at ground, inset balconies above, and a large roof terrace further articulate the simplicity of the building, whilst creating positive connections between internal spaces and the abundant landscape which sits in and around the project. Spatial unity: The wooden box on top has several big openings in it. In the centre of the house there is an empty space with a skylight and all four facades have a large window. At the two ends of the superstructure are the bedrooms with a maximal view of the surrounding nature. Sunblinds, developed by our own, screen from sunlight and solar heat. The sunblinds, made of horizontal slats, move like shutters. Because they consist of two parts with a bend in the middle, the shutters when opened raise like porches above the glass facade. The paintings and sculptures can be exhibited in the centre of the house around the empty space. The empty space unites spatially ground floor and top floor and the skylight allows daylight to enter both floors. Incidence of light: The ground floor consists of a series of museumlike ordened spaces, offering varying views of the lake and the surroundings. The overall glass facade folds itself almost invisibly around the spaces and creates a contour which together with the overhanging superstructure alllows for varying incidence of light. At the outside, back from the glass facade, there are cloths which can be pulled up. The cloths not only screen from solar heat, they create a covered and screened off terrace too. The clients of villa Röling are passionate art collectors. They love to be surrounded by works of art. Therefore their main wish regarding their new dwelling was that it would do greatest justice to their collection of paintings and sculptures. However, the location of their house, at the edge of the lake Westeinderplas, is so spendid that it was no option to make a closed volume which would have large wall surfaces for hanging on the paintings but would limit the view of the surroundings. The view of the lake and the garden should be maximal. Therefore we decided to design two contrasting volumes, a transparent glass volume overlooking the lake and the garden, and a ´floating´ wooden box on top of it for the works of art. Rye, in East Sussex, is one of England’s best kept secrets. Nestled between green rolling hills and the English Channel it’s one of the best-preserved medieval towns in England. With names like Watchbell Lane, Mermaid Street and Wish Street you can’t fail to be enchanted by a town that time seems to have passed by. Crooked half-timbered houses line a muddle of steep cobbled lanes, there are beach walks, ancient inns and even a castle. The project makes use of advanced technology, and has determined a special type of concrete to maximize the durability and beauty of the building. The new headquarters of the Iberê Camargo Foundation will comprise nine exhibition rooms, distributed over three floors, together with a large space on the first floor, which will total about 1300 m² available for the permanent display of Iberê's paintings, prints and drawings. In addition to these spaces, the design envisages a cafeteria, a shop, a documentation centre and an auditorium with cinema facilities for 125 people. Two studios are also proposed: one will exhibit Iberê Camargo's tools and equipment and the other will be intended for a variety of other activities. Siza chose white concrete as the main construction material as a means to establish a dialogue with modern Brazilian architecture. Concrete allows for great flexibility in the organization of volumes and shapes. In Brazil there is an important tradition of concrete utilization. Form Follows Fashion: Architecture and fashion belong to the realm of creative arts, establishing a give and take relationship. Architectural identities are adopted by fashion in its affinity for experimental transformation. On the other hand, architecture is an ensemble of socio-morphological forces, drawing inspiration from the open-ended design of fashion scenery. Once the sloped spaces flow into the factory sandwiched levels, the discovery of the wine making process exhibited, and experience through a sloped ramp, leads and defines the architectural experiences. The manufacture process is the built design. The structure is a purely functional expression of an “assemblage” of load bearing precast elements and cast in situ ones Ixir Winery By Raed Abillama Architects 📷 Courtesy of Raed Abillama Architects ...................................................... The blocks are set out on a hill with a view of Izola Bay on one side and of the surrounding hills on the other. Since the blocks are subject to a Mediterranean climate outdoor space and shade are important elements. The project proposed a veranda for each apartment, thus providing an outdoor space that is intimate, partly connected with the interior, shady and naturally ventilated. The blocks are set out on a hill with a view of Izola Bay on one side and of the surrounding hills on the other. The given urban plot was 2blocks of 60x28 meters. There are no structural elements inside the apartments, thus providing flexibility and the possibility of reorganising things. The project is a winning entry for two housing blocks in a competition convoked by the Slovenia Housing Fund, a government-run programme that is providing low-cost apartments for young families. The proposal won for economic, rational and functional issues but mostly for the ratio between gross vs. saleable surface area and the flexibility of the plans. The building’s interiors are simple, large skylights being their utmost defining trait. The great symphonic hall differs from these in that it is a sculpted object, embedded into a barely outlined mineral-like space. With an expressionist mindset, we have aimed to use geometry to give shape to a new rhythmic composition that conveys feelings by balancing massiveness and verticality. The use of glass as the exterior cladding material highlights how the building contrasts with the conditions of its surrounding environment. It creates a bright, transparent and upstanding object. The building emerges from its urban context, influenced by the steeply pitched roofs and the verticality of the city’s residential buildings, by the monumentality of the upright ornaments of its neo-Gothic churches and the heavy volumes of its Classicist buildings, by the towers that dot its entire skyline and the cranes of its port. The true “wow!” factor of ballet comes from the entire performance as a whole. There is never a singular step that defines a ballet; it is the entire production that leaves audiences astounded and amazed. The purpose of ballets, especially the classical ones, is to tell the audience a story. Everything from the intricate set designs to the elegant costumes, to even the make-up, is crucial to a ballet’s tale and overall impression on the audience. So many artistic elements are combined to make a ballet performance what it is, and the dancers’ passion and emotion are the final touch to the show. For years, the debate of art versus sport has angered ballerinas and has taken away the focus of the true artistry of dance. Yes, it cannot be ignored that ballet is an exceptionally physical performance art. People attend ballets to see grace and beauty, not to see ballerinas struggle with the physical intensity of dance. When attending a ballet performance, an audience member will never be able to see the strain on the body because of the ballerina’s ability to convey emotion, passion, and artistry. Ballerinas are extremely competitive with each other and the ballet world has a hint of a cutthroat culture. However, ballerinas are competitive with each other in the same way artists, musicians and actors are. Ballet itself is not a competitive sport; it is an art.
