We did it! Thank you so much to each and every person who contributed to our fundraising campaign to repair our murals and protect them from any future vandalism. It took just under three weeks for our community to come together and raise this amount, an absolutely incredible accomplishment. This outpouring of support from people and organizations here in Des Moines and from across the country has been equal parts overwhelming, reaffirming, and uplifting. Most importantly though, your support has been a resounding rejection of the beliefs and actions taken by the individual that vandalized our murals.
Now that the campaign has been funded our next steps will be to finalize the repairs to the Didi Contreras @didirok
mural at 1600 East Grand, and to the Nicole Salgar @nmsalgar
mural at 1541 East Grand. We will be coordinating with both artists in the next few days to figure out what the best ways to do this will be. The @leter91
lotería murals at La Favorita have already been restored thanks to the help of @ryantopete_is_not_on_the_gram
Once all of the murals are restored we will work to get protective coatings applied, so long as the weather allows.
If we come in under budget we will use the remaining funds to apply coatings to our other murals we feel could be at risk of vandalism, or we will put it toward painting a new mural in the community.
Please stay tuned as we continue working on these projects and continue to share updates. Also please continue to reach out if you have any comments questions or suggestions. We will do our best to respond as quickly as possible.
Much love and thanks to all!
