Date 9 Feb 1984 - CONfectionary
Tom exited the lift and did a double-take - James's house door was ajar. "Hello?" He called out cautiously, "James?" He gingerly pushed the door further open and peered into the empty dark living room. He did not have a good feeling about this and tightened his fists, ready for anything.
James's call was cryptic. He sounded urgent. Like this was a matter of life and death. And he hung up before he could question him further.
Strangely there was music and it sounded like it was coming from the kitchen. Tom readied himself and lurched into the kitchen with a yell with both his fists up.
Mei Mei screamed and dropped the sugar canister. The floor was instantly covered by a sea of white. "Mei Mei, what...?" Tom blurted out, too stunned to do anything else. "I could ask you the same question," Mei Mei was besides herself, squatting down quickly to scoop up the sugar into a bowl with her two hands, unsuccessfully. "I called out but nobody answered and I thought..." "And you thought you would swoop down scaring the living daylights out of me?!" Mei Mei muttered crossly. "Look I didn't come here to pick a fight with you." Tom's face started to get red. "Yes go explain why you came!" Mei Mei challenged.
Just then, there was a ding ding from the oven. Mei Mei gasped, spun around and flung open the open door. A billow of smoke immediately enveloped the kitchen. Through the smoke, Mei Mei brought out a deformed-looking cake. "It's ruined." Mei Mei wailed.
Tom took a look at the lopsided confectionery with blueberry compote dripping off it and a light blub went off. "You were trying to bake me my favourite cake?" Mei Mei's face dissolved into a blubbery mess, "I wanted to say I'm sorry..." Tom's arms enveloped her in a tight embrace.
James watched from his bedroom with a bittersweet smile and slowly turned away.
