I love this quote but in a strange way I feel that our heart, our bones and our souls are all weighing down under the burden of the lives we are living.
Life is beautiful in a strangely weird sort of a way and everyone who goes through it has many battles to fight, some more than others, but we fight them nonetheless. Sometimes with dignity and sometimes in complete and utter state of helplessness and despondency.
However, fight we must because there is really no other way to go about it.
As we look for meaning and try to make sense of the cards that we are dealt with and reason for it all, food somehow helps and gives us the much needed nourishment that we need to go on. Especially a plate of home cooked meal, made with love and care and sometimes just out of sheer despair.
Each tiny morsel of this meal not only brings comfort but also a slight sense of purpose and courage with a gentle reminder that ‘this too shall pass, this too shall pass’. Don’t you think so ?

Mashed potatoes, Capsicum, Onions, Tomatoes, Beetroot & Cauliflower sautéed together in Pav Bhaji masala always evokes very strong memories of home. Especially the last year in college when I used to travel to VT (now CST) from Ulhasnagar (a 2 hour trip one way) to go to the British Library to get reference books for my English Literature lessons.
Besides feeling really posh for spending a whole day in a library the other highlight of this trip would be eating Pav Bhaji at ‘Canon’, a small shack opposite the train station for the princely sum of 15 Rs. Jostling for space, trying to catch the eye of the Mavshi (the lady managing the counter) to place your order and scoffing down the Bhaji that would be drowned in Butter before you missed the train was somehow really exciting.
If you were lucky and had some extra pocket money you could order a bottle of Lassi (chilled yogurt drink) or a plate of Gajar ka Halwa (Carrot fudge) which tasted so good after the spicy buttery Bhaji. Sigh !!! I miss those days when just saving up to eat food made you happy and not at all guilty.
Coming back to this picture, this is not that Pav Bhaji, it is a little restrained a little more well behaved. Because it was taken just before a ton of Butter was added to the bowl and then it became the mess we have come to love.
I feel that we get so enamoured with the silkiness and decadence of Butter and rightly so, because Butter makes everything better, that we forget how beautiful the Bhaji itself is on its own. Don’t you agree ?
