Did you know that 20% of the population has a disability and yet this is represented in film and T.V. by only 2% of the speaking roles? AND of those speaking roles the majority of them go to non-disabled actors. So imagine that you are a disabled actor and FINALLY a role comes along that you fit the criteria for perfectly, but then the producers decide to hire someone non-disabled for whatever reason. It sounds maddening, right?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This past trip to L.A. I was happy to have the opportunity to meet with actor/activists @eileengrubba
and get more insight into this issue. Hopefully, will be working with this community in the future with their audition nerves (since they don't have the opportunity to audition as often, you can imagine the stakes are much higher, resulting in bigger stage fright) by giving some free workshops for them in L.A. later this year.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These photos are from an event I attended at SAG/AFTRA with a panel of entertainers with disabilities. Hearing their stories of how not being represented in media affects how they are treated in the world made me realize this is EVERYONE's problem - duh! Yes, of course it is! And I'm passionate to get involved.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I’ve been waiting to see @crazyrichasians
for a long time now, but it was actually my parents who suggested that we go watch it together as a family, so I bought four tickets for Friday night’s screening. I loved seeing my beautiful Asian actors on screen, as strong & sexy men and women who are so HUMAN, just as I loved seeing my beautiful Asian and non-Asian audience members laugh and cry along to this crazy story about love, family, and sacrifice. My parents and I talked about the impact of this film and why it’s important to feature Asians as multidimensional people, a convo that I don’t always get to talk about with them. The film was projected to make $18M during its opening weekend and as of now it has hit $34M! This proves that Asians can be leads and kill it in the box office. To all the producers and filmmakers in the industry, I hope this gives you a glimpse of the potential that storytelling can be. We are here to stay. Stay woke. Stay golden ✊
No matter your Pantone. The perfect foundation for every color is clean skin!
050 • Finding My Way Back (5/5)
There are people on this planet who are literally born to write. And this evening, I realized that I’m not here to write, be it in magazines or on Instagram. That is not my role in this boring ass bubble. I’m here to live, to simultaneously eat gelato and lose weight, and to f-ck things up in the film industry (one day), because we’re still not where we should have been 100 years ago. My talent is my imagination, and my desire is to see a balanced representation of our humanity in digital and mainstream media. I’ve been complaining about the lack of human diversity in films for 20 (!!!) f-cking years now. We have a long way to go, and the truth is, we’ll never get there. But, we can try. So, I’m going to rest the digital pen for a while and focus on my third eye. I accept my failure as a writer, as a post-graduate and as a human, and the only thing I can do with this knowledge is to now redirect my energy towards executing screenplays that matter. If something miraculous happens on the way, I’ll update you, but for now, I’ll ttyl. Peace.

Finally saw Crazy Rich Asians 🥂Hands down one of the best movies this year. This is culturally important because diversity should be celebrated, not hated. It was heartwarming seeing people come together at the movie theatre and celebrate cultural diversity and truly enjoy the movie to the point of the crowd erupting into applause. 🖤
Also, this movie was not your typical romcom. It did not blindly chase love, but instead emphasized self worth. 🙌🏻
(spoiler) “Let’s be clear. The problem with our marriage isn’t my family’s money. It’s that you’re a coward. I gave up job offers, social work, making sure I wasn’t being too showy, just so you wouldn’t feel lesser than. But I’ve just realized it’s not my job to make you feel like a man. I can’t make you something you’re not.” - Astrid. DAMN GURL👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

PROJETO “AGORA É A VEZ”

Mudita is a word from Sanskrit. It means unselfish joy in the good fortune of others.
I learned this word years ago from my friend @soulcity_yoga.
Over the years we kept sharing this special word with each other during times of growth in our mission to create diversity in yoga. As I listened to my friends heartfelt speech on this very topic at @beyondwallslynn
I realized we are here again. Mudita my friend.
The world is listening and your work has not gone unnoticed.

049 • Finding My Way Back (4/5)
I prepared a lengthy post for y’all. But, I just got off a phone call with a gem of a human being named Kevin, and I don’t have much to say anymore.
My convo with Kevin was centered on clarity. I needed to understand why I am where I am in 2018 (especially when I feel a responsibility to use my talents for a proper purpose), and what tasks I should be focused on executing right now. During our convo, Kevin responded, “You’re feeling your fears. You’re feeling your frustrations…You’re experiencing rejection personally and professionally…Feel these expressions for what they are and use them to propel you forward.” After digesting Kevin’s words, I realized that I failed miserably most of my life. And this week, I’ve really had to reevaluate what matters now, and what will matter when I’m dead.
What matters to me as I’m typing this is, figuring out how to work however many jobs I can juggle between now and next year, and no longer writing (or pitching), because at this stage, it’s pointless. And what will matter to me when I’m almost dead? Whether or not I was able to exercise the Jewish principle of tikkun olam through the medium of film. At the end of the day, filmmaking is where it’s at for me. But, I’ve wasted so many years and so much money trying to convince the powers that be in the publishing world that I have something fresh to offer when it comes to essays and profiles, that I let every single rejection letter get to me. And, I essentially lost my way. I had forgotten my purpose.

As a woman struggling with the competing and depleting demands of motherhood, career and the rest, I believe there are 5 mistakes we make that sabotage our energy. ⚡️💚⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✘ Mistake 1. SITTING. NOT MOVING.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Movement or exercise is one of the best ways to build muscle and oxygenate the body and building muscle mass is especially effective. Generally the more muscle we have, the more mitochondria we have, the more energy we have and the healthier we are.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✔︎1st Step to Get-up & Glow. MOVE EVERYDAY, PREFERABLY OUTSIDE.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It doesn’t need to be a full on exercise class (which can also put stress on the body), just something that gets the body moving, the endorphins activated and the blood and oxygen circulating. Importantly, something you enjoy and can easily become a pleasure filled habit.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The hardest part is ‘thinking’ about doing it. Once we have our sneakers on or pantry stocked it’s easy to make it happen. Less thinking and more get-up and glow.✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you want to know more about what these energy saboteurs, grab a copy of my eBook and if you really want to Get-up & Glow, join my 21 day practical protocol. It will transform your health 🌿(links are in my bio👆👀) and I’m delighted to have Liz Lang @the_clean_core_physio

Got dressed up to watch the premiere of “Crazy Rich Asians.” Let me just say, this film was hilarious, clever, heartwarming, and far exceeded my expectations. It was nice to see a spectrum of Asian and Asian-American characters on the screen. We are funny. We are sexy. We are witty. We are talented. We are complex. We can be anything beyond a stereotype. I am looking forward to seeing how this movie opens doors to more Asian and Asian-American narratives. If you haven’t seen it already, don’t miss out! This movie is phenomenal! That’s all. 🥑
