It’s always entertaining (and a little frustrating) trying to explain to people that I paint doors. I have to spend a few minutes explaining that I don’t simply paint front doors to houses, that they are paintings of doors that emphasize the liminal space. Most of my doors are on canvas or wood, which makes it easier to explain. However, there was a time where I found old hollow doors with a flat front and painted them to look like they have the recessed paneling (like this one) and this just made it even more confusing. It was a great experience, I enjoyed making a true-to-size door and embellishing it with both painted elements (the number) and actual door parts (the door handle). I enjoyed doing this as part of my BFA Solo Show in college but I’m enjoying the new directions I’m taking in my art-very different from this. Did you originally think this was a real paneled door at first glance?
