Some of the more common neurotransmitters that regulate mood are Serotonin, Dopamine, and Norepinephrine. Serotonin imbalance is one of the most common contributors to mood problems. Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland when there is very little light, and it signals our body to sleep. And if we choose to ignore those signals (because falling asleep while driving or in a meeting for example may have negative consequences), our natural sleep rhythms may be thrown off balance. We naturally produce more melatonin in winter months. Common treatments for SAD include light therapy, vitamin D supplements and antidepressants. Ive been asking myself lately where all my attention is going, and it's hard not to get sucked in to that dopamine loop of social media and check it way too much out of habit. 🙄 I find that I lose so much time and end up feeling regretful and frustrated with myself. 🤦🏽‍♀️ So, today, I became more aware of my reasons for checking social media by asking myself what I'm hoping to see. Dopamine functions in movement, working memory, and ADDICTION! (It also has a cool function of inhibiting prolactin...high yield for later on). So, back to the three-way relationship. When the piece of cake (or unhealthy/favorite food) touches the right taste buds in the tongue, our dopamine gets released and keeps us coming back for more with that great memory of how it tasted. The brain can resist these urges but it is difficult. Hence, one of the reasons why adhering to a strict diet can be challenging. There are two types of stress, distress and eustress. The first being bad for the body and the latter being benefical and adaptive for the body . Both stresses release cortisol, which to get us ready to "fight or flight" shuts down systems like the immunity, dopamine and serotonin . Exercise is a stress on the body. It can be adaptive if prescribed properly. But too little or too much will lead to distress releasing cortisol . If not filtered through the body in its proper course, cortisol can have the undesired effects of slowing development, fat storage and symptoms of depression . Rest is the best way to get rid of cortisol, so finding the balance between exercise progression and recovery is essential to have the best results and function of the body

Here is what the research says: - The efficacy of a nutritional strategy based on BCAA supplementation and aimed at reducing/preventing muscle damage resulting from high intensity exercise seems to be poor. There is no direct evidence of positive effects of BCAAs on muscle damage (Foure A. 2017). - If only 3 EAAs are consumed, as is the are with consumption of BCAAs, then protein breakdown is the only source of the remaining EAAs required as precursors for muscle protein synthesis. In other news, I finally found a 4th rotation - a collaboration between a Chemical Engineering lab synthesizing fluorescent carbon nanotubules to detect dopamine, and a Psychology lab that investigates the role of dopamine in decision making and addiction. Sounds cool on paper, but in practice, both PIs are traveling this month and I have no idea what I’m supposed to be doing! There’s a long way to go on the development side before the tools are ready for use in vivo, so I’m just hoping to be as useful as possible in assisting in that process and praying that’s enough for these PIs to have faith I can carry this project forward in the future. Once we get the tools functional in vivo, I’ll be in my comfort zone wrangling animal behavior 💪.
