[An RPG Book Showed Up]
Ryuutama (りゅうたま): Natural Fantasy Role Play
Ryuutama is Atsuhiro Okada's (岡田篤宏) take on the pen & paper (ie tabletop/table-talk) RPG as informed by early japanese video game-RPGs (JRPGs) — particularly Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.
The base system has 7 character classes: Minstrel, Merchant, Hunter, Healer, Farmer, Artician, and Noble, which are all combined with one of the 3 types: Attack, Technical, or Magic, thus a good selection of playing styles can be catered to.
The GM takes the role of one of the dragons which will guide, help, or even challenge the travelers.
A large focus is on the journey, and one player takes on mapping duty, drawing up the map one square at a time as progress permits, and the group is also to manage their food and water supply.
Combat takes place on a simple map divided into two sides each with a front, and back row, and row-placement decide the effect of melee vs. ranged attacks, damage and effects.
Obviously, this is just a basic ramble on my part, as there are lots of fun additions and perculiar mechanics.
I had been waiting for my copy of Ryuutama for more than a year*, and even went so far as to purchase the PDF on drivethruRPG — but not owning a tablet makes those less attractive, and I never read it cover to cover.
That is about to change, however, and I really hope that I one day get to run this game!

*For more than a year only spanish-language versions were available in Europe.
