ARE YOU TOO COOL TO WEAR A HELMET AND SHOES IN BALI?
Tourists riding motor scooters 🛵 without helmets and shoes is a very common scene in Bali.
This is a photo taken right outside a cafe we love to frequent, and I would estimate that more than 40 percent of the tourists riding motor scooters past the cafe are not wearing helmets or anything more than flip flops on their feet (thongs if you’re an Aussie). In-fact, a few times we’ve seen a young blond women riding around town without a helmet or shoes, with her child strapped to the front of her—also without a helmet, who appears to be no older than 3.
There are a few ways I can look at this... 1. Ignore it, it’s not your business what others do with their lives... And that’s true, it isn’t.
2. Say something about it in the hopes that some people reading this who travel to Bali might think twice about riding without at least a helmet. A good idea.
3. Share it on social media, because all human lives matter. A better idea.
There’s a 2016 Jakarta Post article talking about 500 tourist deaths on motorcycles in Bali and most of the tourists who died suffered severe head trauma from motor scooter / cycle accidents.
Why do people become so careless outside their country?
Maybe they think “It’ll never happen to me...” Or... “I’m a good rider and I’m careful when I ride...” Being fascinated with randomness and uncertainty, I watch some of these riders travelling very fast down the hill past the cafe (I’m not exaggerating), and at any moment something catastrophic could happen because there’s no way out of having a bad accident on this road if someone else makes a mistake.
The probability of an accident occurring is more than likely, and getting out of it alive is less than likely—especially when you don’t wear a helmet.
So if it’s good enough for professionals to wear helmets and shoes on motorcycles, and if it is the law to wear them where you come from—then you as an amateur rider, should wear them too.
If a simple message can get just one person to change their actions, it’ll be worth it.
