Race recap: Yesterday was the 2nd race of the Florida Endurance Series, the Battle of Snow Hill. I went into this race with the same goals and mindset, even with a lower back flare-up and a month long battle with sinusitis. I didn’t feel my best but riding your bike for 6 hours doesn’t feel that great either so no point in accepting mental defeat...ever. I guess I’ve reached a point where I don’t let my mind or anything else dictate odds, I take charge of that. Anyhow, even though my legs were incredibly groggy all race, I didn’t give in and pushed a steady pace, my pace. I can always bank on being able to hold that steady flow regardless of what is going on internally or externally...always own the mental warfare!
Ok, so the race part... I typically like racing at Snow Hill but this course was laid out a little different than normal and included a ridiculous amount of rooty sections. Still, the bulk of the course was pretty fun. The course was supposed to be 4 15 mile laps but they had to cut out a bad section so it was only a 13 mile loop. I settled into my pace early and stayed at that tempo until I was done. Granted, if I felt better I would’ve gone a little bit faster, but I finished the day in 5th place…only 4 minutes off of 3rd. I was bummed again to miss top 3 but I will keep grinding and give it a go next month at Santos, the 3rd race of FLE.
Again, my nutrition and hydration plans were on point...Bike rolled solid as usual besides some shifting issues and my fitness is excellent for January. And as always, thanks to @gone_riding_events
for continuing to put on top notch mtn bike races year after year!
