On my way to work this morning I was listening to @davidgoggins
on the Joe Rogan Experience and I realised I never really push myself to that uncomfortable place. Sure I run, and am active, but it's really when I feel like it, and always within comfort zone.
I had planned earlier in the week to do a trail run today, but I cancelled it because the weather was "not conducive to running". I decided to do my run anyway. Not just a run, my planned run.
All day I was thinking about it and actually pumped to go run in the rain, "but surely 5 miles is to long, just do 3". As I made excuses for why I couldn't do my planned 5 miles, I essentially made my run easy again.
I finally committed to doing my original 5 mile trail run regardless of what it took.
Sure enough the first 3 miles were fun and I barely noticed them. I kept bargaining with myself in case it got too difficult.
I didn't cheat on my run either, left the phone and music behind, told my running buddy @donyojan
where I was "if you don't hear from me in 2 hours" and got wet muddy and cold. Very insightful run.
This pales compared to the stuff that many others face and have to fight through daily but the discomfort I put myself through today helped me have a lot more empathy, I highly recommend you try it.
Have a great weekend go get after it. "Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never – in nothing, great or small, large or petty – never give in!"
