The largest component is your basal metabolic rate (BMR). These are the calories you burn at rest, just to sustain all your bodily functions like your heartbeat, brain function, organ function, etc. It accounts for ~70% of TDEE in sedentary people but obviously will account for a smaller proportion of calorie burn in more active people. . . Activity is the most variable aspect of total daily energy expenditure. There are 2 main types: exercise activity thermogenesis (EAT) and non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT). The non-exercise activity includes any activity that's not formal exercise like washing the dishes and fixing your hair. Believe it or not, NEAT is the main reason people have such drastically different "metabolisms". . . Thermic effect of food (TEF) are the calories you burn to digest, absorb, and assimilate the food you consume. The calories you burn to break down food won't be more than the calories in the food itself, though. TEF accounts for ~10% of your TDEE. Protein has a thermic effect of ~30%, so many of its calories are used just to break it down. . . Tag someone who needs to hear this.
