The satisfaction of knowing you just gave your all to a workout is one of the best feelings 🙌🏻 lately I’ve had this mental battle with myself to push harder in my workouts instead of just going through the motions. It is waaaaay easier to slow down or stop when you get a little tired but I hate when a workout ends and I know I could’ve done more. Today I pushed hard - like legitimately almost cried during a squat hold because it was so hard 😂 and I feel amazing right now! I woke up sluggish, tired and feeling uninspired but after that I’m ready to take on the day 💪🏻 thanks @shaunt for kicking my butt!

I almost had a melt down the other week. - Like- a full blown tantrum and meltdown. - So many moving parts for so many of us this time of year: families, friends, events, travel, shopping... - Heads can spin at just the thought of it. I know mine started to. - So I went for a hike to clear my head. I block scheduled my most pressing and important tasks into my calendar. I made sure to get my workouts in for the week. - We can’t always control everything. In fact we rarely have full so tell over much. Tonight I got to sample one of the 20 min workouts. The best thing about it is that the only thing that was needed beside myself was a step. For someone who used to go to the gym and spend at least an hour working out (ok let’s be real, I was not actively moving the entire 60 min) I never thought you could get an effective workout in just 20 min. COACHES VS. INFLUENCERS . . . What’s the difference? Influencers are the “fitness” personality you follow on IG, posting her every move- in and out of the gym- in the signature influencer gear: trendy, expensive leggings, cleverly coordinated (but not matching) sports bra, the newest “it” sneakers that look like they’ve never seen pavement, and full eye makeup and flowing locks- both totally practical for the gym, right?? . . . She looks the part. Trim. Defined. Almost too perfect. If you follow her workouts, you’ll maybe look like her, someday. Or will you? . . . Is she legit? Is her content genuine? Or is it just more regurgitated fodder about the latest fad diet, the newest MLM “magic bullet💯”, or a bunch of non-advice about “loving yourself because you’re enough”? And before you rally the crowd and get your pitchforks out: yes, I encourage self love, but if you don’t have it, you need to dig deeper than the “mom juice” she’s selling that claims to fix all your problems. But I digress. . . . Are her weights appropriately sized - or are they excessively huge (read: likely fake) or extremely small? I’ll pick on the kettlebell-ers because I am one: if I see someone using teeny tiny baby bells on a basic move like a swing or row, I’m going to go out on a limb and say she’s probably inexperienced at best, or (more likely) completely untrained in using them. How do I know, you ask? ➡️➡️ Reputable certification requirements include a strength test. . . . Has she earned the right to coach others? Or is she just on a hunt to be insta-famous? Thousands of followers can be bought, right along with the “influencer” uniform, and “cut & paste fitness newsletter” content. This picture is such a good reminder to me of my WHY...I wasn’t miserable in my own skin. I wasn’t depressed. I wasn’t dangerously overweight...BUT I was uncomfortable in certain clothing styles (or, ahem, a bathing suit). I was exhausted and overwhelmed with the FULLness of life. I was fluffy, especially around the middle, and I longed for a leaner, healthier version of myself. • I was trying all the “right” things: more cardio, fewer calories, saying NO to all the fun foods I wanted to eat. Even if the number on the scale changed, my overall health and well-being didn’t seem to budge. It was getting easier and easier to listen to that nagging voice inside that was telling me things would never change and it just wasn’t worth the time or effort anymore! • I didn’t feel like I was worth the time and effort anymore! • I look in the mirror now and I feel leaner and stronger than I have ever been. I feel confident in my own skin and strong! Grad student’s guide to cardio (usually cardiNO but you know it’s kinda necessary) - I do not always have the time to walk on the treadmill for 45-60... does anyone have the time? Or even want to.... but sometimes I will do that to get steps in and take a textbook or some notes. - BUT MOST OF THE TIME, I like to HIIT (high intensity interval training) it’s QUICK, EFFECTIVE, and you can incorporate it ANYTIME ANYWHERE and with little to no equipment!

Listen up! There IS such thing as over exercising. AND there’s also such thing as too much cardio! Say whatttt? 💪🏻 The fact of the matter is, you can’t simply do hours of cardio and expect to continue to see weight loss results that last. While you will see some initial weight loss, you will be losing some very important calorie burning muscle with that weight - slowing down your metabolism in the long run. 💪🏻 Many women are hitting the ellipticals, the bikes or the treadmill for hours on end, thinking that it is the best option for weight loss. 💪🏻 Here’s the deal - cardio is important.
