There was a time when I thought coming into this pose was impossible. “I just don’t have the strength” I said. Sometime later I tried it again and to my total surprise, there I was. This pose comes up in every Sun B and yet, I still do not enjoy it so I did my research and words like powerful, intense, wild, fierce and awkward came up. This posture is essential to the Sun B series as it increases stamina, tonifies and releases stress. Chair reminds me that even the things we don’t enjoy can be vital to our growth and necessary to bring balance to our movement. . . Final day 7 of #OpenHipsInSantosha was yesterday and we had yogis choice for any hip opener... I went with #compasspose as it's a great one for opening out the side body, as well as the outer and inner hips and a great preparatory pose to work towards for #kurmasana #ekapadakoundinyasana2 . Yoga! Wise Teacher Paloma desperately tried to help us do a tripod headstand to scissors transition tonight. I failed then, but I succeeded here! I tried a bunch of variations of this before finally getting it. Indeed, straight legs make getting into this pose much harder. I couldn’t do that. I found keeping the back leg tucked in and close to the body made it far easier to keep that foot from touching down. After you get your balance back after lifting your head you can extend those legs back out straight. It ain’t super pretty, but it’ll do as a foundation for working on the transition. The first time I came across EPK2 was in a level 2 yoga class. I was still new to arm balances and I remember watching in awe as the yogi next to me gracefully lifted off into this pose from downward dog, as if she did it every day (to be fair, she probably did!!). But that image has stayed with me since which is why this beautiful arm balance will always have a special place in my heart. My biggest tip for this pose is actually abit of a cheat - if your left leg is extended the side, dig your right elbow into your abdominals and lean against it. Even if you do not ordinarily have the strength to hold an arm balance, this trick usually works!! ⁣ ⁣ It’s of course our last day of #fitnflexyfall and I have LOVED all of your posts. Here’s the second half of my flow video (swipe left). I added #epk2 from Chin stand. I’m also practicing to balance one handed in Chin stand but it was so much harder on the pol deck (it’s sloped 😬). Yupp... after like 77 face plants, i held the pose long enuf to “stick my tongue out to myself” 😂. I had a super rough week, and i was glad i got a bit sense of victory today. Yesterday, i was plannjng to go to this class, but had a last minute random change and ended up in @blackrose_fran class.. only to learn the technique to this pose. What do YOU SEE in this picture???? A yogini doing an advanced arm balance called Eka Pada Koundinyasana II or Flying Splits. WHAT YOU DON’T SEE IN THIS PICTURE - Slide 2. That is my X-RAY. That is my fracture. That is my titanium pin and what holds it in place. Notice that where the leg RESTS on the arms is exactly the place of the fracture. This happens on to many arm balances...and on too many postures. It is bloody scary. The leg goes where the brain tells it to, responding to that call. The heart is still very afraid. Of more pain, of new injuries. The heart is trying to find C O N F I D E N C E. The mind is trying to process the feelings, held by a much more resilient - but not less stubborn - soul. Practice has to carry on as life carries on, right?? Here we go! Everything you want is on the other side of your FEAR! Just go for it! And... always be kind to people, show love... there are lots of things going on INSIDE them that you don’t see, therefore, you don’t know... 😍😍😍Repost By allisonrayjeraci: Finally, a better purpose for a bolster than a crash pad - I’m not anti-putting something down in front of you for your head, I’m just not the biggest fan of it. . Why? . When I put the bolster in front of me, it’s in my line of vision and it signals to me that if I take flight, I’ll fall and this will soften the blow. I’m not focused internally but rather thinking more about my head then what I’m actually doing and feeling in my body which is the learning ground for the exact oppposite- not falling. . Are their any pros? . Of course! If it’s used as a tool to understand where you are in space so that when I feel my weight tipping me, more load coming into my fingertips and look at that I’m on my head- now I understand how far is too far because now my head is on the bolster. Now my body knows how to interpret the messages of shifting. . You can also learn from putting your head in that position and lifting away from the bolster. It’s a much stronger action than going into the balance bc you are pressing up from the ground so think pushing from the ground through chaturanga and plank (opposed to plank to the floor - a much easier action than the prior). . And of course there are those extreme measures of fear - but in that case is a freestanding arm balance the best way to approach them? In this case, I say no. But that’s my opinion and based on teaching. . These poses that I demonstrate are not in lieu of the bolster crash pad just a new variety of crow, side crow, EPK2 and galavasana. . Day 3 of #TreatYourselfYoga Todays schedule Epk2 | #ekapadakoundinyasana2 I tried this pose for the first time. And it is as difficult as it seams to be. Ask me how I did this and I will cry happy tears. It took some 100 shots, an irritated sister and 2000( not literally) tries to get this one captured. So this is an achievement; today i added a new pose in my muscle memory as well as the daily practice. Everyday life makes me realise my strengths in unusual ways. Growing each day. Are you ready to fly? 🦅 . It’s day 3 of #treatyourselfyoga and today we’re lifting off the ground and flying in #ekapadakoundinyasana2 or #posededicatedtothesagekoundinya 🤗 . Now before you tell me you don’t have the arm strength, fear not! This pose (and most arm balances, for that matter) are not really about isolated arm strength. They are about shifting your gravity center, and using your core and legs to find balance. This is why you can’t jump into an arm balance without control, and why it doesn’t matter if your arms are super strong — if the balance and the rest of the body are not working, nothing will happen. . 📚How to: . In this video I show you a variety of prep work that includes core work, working on lowering from down dog to a preliminary form of epk, and working your way up from lizard. . • The main idea is that you’ll be placing your inner front thigh on the upper arm, and then shifting your gravity center forward (somewhere between your hands). . • Once your gravity center is in place, extending and activating your legs (either point the feet or flex them, find which works best for you in terms of activation) will help you find stability and eventually lift off. . • If you’re prepping from Lizard, play with extending just the front leg by bringing your arm under the front thigh, creating a shelf with your upper arm, and walking forward with that foot until it lifts off.
