Today’s #TuesdayTutorial with Lauren ( @ljuice1 ) ⤵️ “Favorite poses for me come in waves. I love basic poses, but I also love challenging myself to try new things, and #ekapadakoundinyasana2 is an arm balance pose that I'm currently working on mastering! I had tried it several times in the past few years, but have come to perfect it in class with @yoginidanny since she re-introduced it to me. It makes me feel strong and like I'm flying. Arm balances require arm strength, but also lots of core strength, and this particular pose requires open hamstrings and hips if you want to extend both legs. To prep for it, hone in on making your chaturanga's really strong. Hold plank or navasana (boat pose) to strengthen the core. Practice lizard to open the hips and runner's lunge or pyramid pose to open the hamstrings. You can practice tapping your knee to your tricep from down dog ( my favorite way to get into the pose) or you can come into lizard, sling your knee over your shoulder, put the weight into your hands and out of your feet, then lean forward, lift the front leg first then the back so that you are balancing on your arms. Straighten the forward leg to come into the full expression of the pose and even lower your head closer to the ground by leaning forward more. #stefsflowfive for #tryhardtuesday is a bit of core/strength/balance work. This is not a beginner flow, but it is fun, and I’m trying hard to #tryhard this Tuesday. Inhale up, exhale as you fold forward, inhale to lengthen, exhale downward dog, lift the right leg 3-legged dog, on each inhale lengthen and each exhale glide the knee forward tapping your right elbow, center, left elbow, center, then right elbow again. Step forward into a lunge and then lower with control into #anjanyasana with optional back bend. Lift back up into lizard, keep the left hand planted and reach up opening through the chest, right hand reaches towards the sky. Bring the hands down, walk them back a bit and play around with #ekapadakoundinyasana2 (you can place your face down and focus on the leg lift if you’re balance isn’t with you today. Day 2 of #ForgetMeNotYoga 💙🌸💙 is an armbalance and I chose #EkaPadaKoundinyasana2 which I still find really hard but wanted to show you that it’s all possible!!! When I first did this pose in 2016 for a challenge I thought no way was I ever able to do it. It’s now 2018 and it may not be perfect (I cannot do splits and hamstring flexibility is constant #WorkInProgress ) but I’m flying 😄. I remember doing a challenge on IG that helped me enter it from downdog and that was a game changer. It’s not so much up or down as forward and balance. If I can do it so can you!! What is your favourite way to feel? : AMAZED I was asked this question yesterday, and I wrote down a list of answers, but have been trying to hone in on what one feeling was really calling me. I have come to decide that my favourite way to feel is AMAZED. Especially when I amaze myself. The first time I came in to this pose in my yoga practice, I really didn't think I was going to get it, and then suddenly after several tries I picked that back foot up, and it stayed up! I think I screamed and the rest of the class laughed. I felt like I was flying. I completely AMAZED myself. That's one of my favourite things about practicing yoga. Everyday I show up on my mat - just me, just as I am, and every once in a while my body does something that I never knew it was able to do. It's not always a fancy arm balance, or a feat of strength, sometimes it's simply sitting still and being amazed by the sense of calm I can bring just by sitting with my breath. Most of the time this happens when I get in to my body and out of my head, when I stop overthinking everything. That's the moment when amazing things happen. Every little ounce of effort taking care of our bodies goes such a long way! Ayurveda says how your body feels today depends on what you did yesterday and how you feel tomorrow relies on what you do today. While traveling, I think it takes an extra effort to keep up with my practice (especially with distractions like two little kids who love your attention!), but every day I find motivation to move and flow because I concentrate on seeking that wonderful feeling I know comes once I get going. I also rest my mind on how much more I will enjoy my day after a mediation and yoga practice. I have LOVED this past month of filling the cup of my family with love, attention and time BUT I am also looking forward to get back home in my own space with some time to practice and be on my own. A couple screen shots from last week when I was playing on my hands. The transition from one to two is easy enough, but I've yet to achieve two to three, that press up is a monster and then to reengage the core and lengthen through the body after the backbend is a total killer. The last photo also makes me realize I need to spend more time opening my shoulders in order to truly get the stack as well as bring a little more core engagement. But every day is a new day to practice.

Yoga is not just about flexibility, but also strength. Some poses for girls are so easy to achieve because they have a softer, more flexible back, legs, arms... But some poses are easier for guys as they require more strength such as arm balance poses like crow pose. Eka Pada Koundinyasana 2 is a very good pose combining the 2 main elements - flexibility and strength. They say, Yoga has nothing to do with achievement (talking about physical asana practice), but I can't believe that someone doing a handstand was just born into it or just woke up one day and could do it. Im sure this person had a vision of himself doing it, dedication to practice and will to go on after failing. For me asana practise is kind of a metaphor of life itself, but on the mat: creating a vision, breaking it down to steps, practicing each step one after another, till I manifest my vision. In the process there is a lot of feeling, being aware of arising emotions like fear, joy, frustration, pride, disappointment, anger, surrender, peace. All flowing from one to another and my spirit flowing through all the states of my physical body. No actual goal. No end. Just experiencing. But anyway challenges are fun! So yesterday I tried an interesting transition from #astavakrasana into #ekapadakoundinyasana2 . It didn't work from the first time but from the second 😊. Both are very challenging and, that require strength and flexibility at the same time. To prepare for the Astavakrsana consider twists, e.g. #ardamatsyendrasana . Eka pada koundinyasana II (flying splits) is a challenging yoga arm balance pose. Proper warm up and entry for a pose is very important but occasionally to pose for a photo to show off newly acquired skills is incentive enough. Sometimes it’s ok to be human😀. Preparatory poses = sun salutations with Chaturanga arms for full mody mobilisation and arm strength; trikonasana and lizard pose for for leg and hip release. #WeAreAnusara Day 2 - Second Principle . ✨ Muscular Energy ✨ . The second principle of Anusara Yoga is the one that came the easiest to me as a student having been an athlete my whole life. Muscular energy invites us to practice contracting, engaging and directing the energy of our body inward to support itself. By actively engaging and consciously contracting the energy inward we practice making our poses more stable and strong. Muscular energy to me is where we cultivate a higher sense of co-participation in our poses, build confidence through physical self-reliance, and connect to our own power! There are way too many poses to choose from for the 2nd UPA, but I went with #EkaPadaKoundinyasana2 ! This pose truly demands the energy be drawn in even though it looks so spread out and actually because it’s so spread out! It was the first arm balance I remember feeling like I understood how to connect my body parts in, draw in muscularly in all ways and directions, and feel super supported in my own strength through learning how to engage without going overboard (cause that’s totally a thing- just engage enough to feel stable!). Through the power that already exists within me I can defy gravity and fly. . Muscular energy focus in this pose: my favorite trick has been in the flexion of the feet! Not many styles of yoga focus on that and it has been one of the biggest differences in so many poses where the feet seem too far away from the action to matter. Try pulling your toes toward you when you practice this pose to feel how it helps the community of your body feel more integrated and strong! . 🕉 SACRED GEOMETRY/ SACRED ANATOMY 🧘‍♀️ s l o w f l o w . #mypersonalyoga was something i started developing in 2010 after completing my 200hr yoga TT with Larry Schultz at It’s Yoga Sonoma . I noticed how the breath and sequencing assisted me in connecting with my body/temple on a spiritual and cellular level . I started receiving messages from my body in a deeper way than I had being a dancer for 15 years . my inner master shared wisdom and I also started to get messages as I practiced with other beings . since then yoga has served as a ritual - looking and feeling in so many different ways, in constant change and evolvement, it never ever is the same from one ritual to the next . these days I don’t practice asana that much + I haven’t had any PT sessions in a while... but as I moved today for a little while, it hit me again - THE BODY IS SO WISE ✨ ONCE WE AWAKEN THE CELLULAR INTELLIGENCE IN OUR BODY/MUSCLES, VERY LITTLE PRACTICE IS NEEDED, quite the contrary!!! the original structure of the body comes forth... . the presence in each moment, being alert and following the inner flow - is ALL . breathing through lethargy or stiffness, sadness, happiness or whatever comes, really surfaces ones courage and intuition . ✨Eka Pada Koundinyasana II Tutorial ✨ This is one of my favourite arm balances! . . ✅Follow us @yogastrike for more👈👈. You’ve got three options here. 1st: Come from three legged down dog forward to plank and then chaturanga, while placing the inside of your knee/ inner thigh above your elbow. You could stay right here with the back foot on the ground. I actually find this can be harder than the full pose. . 2nd option: Lift that back foot off. If you have a good chaturanga, and your hip is open enough to get the leg onto the arm, then you can do it. Aim for having the elbows stacked above the wrists to find a point of counterbalance. You could keep the leg that is on top of your arm bent, if you have tight hamstrings this will be best for you. . 3rd: A slightly harder way to come into this pose, but I often see it done in classes. From lizard pose, move the shoulder and arm underneath the leg, and come to chaturanga. Lower the chest and fly the back leg. When I was new to this pose I found this impossible, yet I could do it with a bit of momentum, taking option two.
