🏞 A fateful journey 🏞
When the search started at the Viennese court for a suitable bride for the young Emperor Franz Joseph, Archduchess Sophie looked on the daughters of her sister Maria Ludovika as a welcome pool of possible candidates after a few before weren't the right ones because of political or personal interests.
At first it was eldest daughter Helene, called Néné ( 1834-1890), who was intended as his bride. She was very educated and mature according to the age. To keep up the appearances Ludovika took the only 15-year-old Sisi to Bad Ischl, who at the time was heartbroken because of Count Richard Schwarzenberg and in the hope to marry her with Archduke Karl Ludwig ( a brother of Franz Joseph, he and Sisi were interested in each other ). On 16.8.1853 Ludovika, Helene and Elisabeth arrived late in Bad Ischl. Because an aunt had died shortly before, the family had to travel in mourning clothes. During the travel Ludovika suffered from severe migraine attacks and had to interrupt the drive. So did also the ladies-in-waiting because of a storm and couldn't be in Ischl before them.
Only a lady of Archduchess Sophie helped in the Hotel Austria to dust the clothes reasonably and to fix the hairstyles. Especially Néné should be prepared, while Sisi dressed her hair and braided them to simple pigtails.
Archduchess Sophie was delighted with the grace and turn-out of Sisi in spite of the sadness in her simple black dress.
Néné looked old-fashioned and boring in her dress and hairstyle. 5/5 How did other people see Crown Prince Rudolf? How was his relationship with them?
Princess Louise ( sister of Stephanie and a close friend and confidante of Rudolf ) wrote in her memoirs 1926:
"He was more than handsome; he was seductive. He was medium-sized and really good proportioned, even though he seemed very tender, very strong. Clearly appeard his thoroughbred, and one thought involuntarily of a thoroughbred horse; because from it he also had the essentials...like it he had light sense and mood. His matt complexion reflected sentimentality; his eye whose brown, shining iris began to shimmer in the moment of excitement, seemed to alter its shape with the expression as well. He was sensitive and changed his mood, was amiable at one moment, angry at next, and at the third moment he was able to be the most delightful person again." Like none of the sisters Rudolf was the heir of his mother and not of his father. Temperament and talent, fantasy, liveliness, sensitivity, humour, quick thinking- all this he had in common with Elisabeth.
Marie Festetics about the 15-year-old Crown Prince:
"The Crown Prince's eyes shone...He was very happy/blessed to be with his mother who he worshiped...He has a lot of his mother, mainly her charm, beside the brown eyes." The strongest bond he had with his sister Gisela. Both were inseparable and really loved each other. Gisela never got over the loss.
Rudolf really woreshiped and loved his mother, who called him "My beloved Bubi". He imitated her and shared her views and the love for Hungary. He described his time with her there when he was 8-year-old as the most beautiful of his childhood. But when Marie Valerie was born Sisi only had eyes for her. Because of that he often was jealous.
The relationship with his father was often marked by yearning for recognition and the inability of appreciation. Only on the hunt he got the recognition and love he so much desired.

4/5 Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria-Hungary
It was not only in public life that his problematic position prevented Rudolf from leading a life according to his ideals. He also felt he was misunderstood within the family and received only little support from those around him.
All his life Rudolf tried to gain his father's recognition, but was systematically excluded by the emperor from all decision-making processes, political or not. He met with nothing but lack of understanding from his father, who expected his son to submit to his will and to function perfectly but was incapable of making his son feel appreciated.
Rudolf also had a very ambivalent relationship with his mother. Although both were very similar and had liberal views, a certain distance always remained between them.
In addition there were problems in his marriage with Stephanie of Belgium, which ended in a disastrous. Both were very different.
Rudolf began increasingly to despise convention, escaping into numerous affairs and visiting prostitutes. Frustrated by his isolated position in family and at court, Rudolf sought release in alcohol and drugs. He suffered from depression, and his state of health was worsened rapidly by his lifestyle and the consequences of a venereal disease ( probably gnorrhoea).
The 31-year-old crown prince saw suicide as his only way out. Having toyed with the idea for some time, he found in his 17-year old mistress, Baroness Mary Vetsera, a companion.
On 30 January 1889 he put an end to his life at Mayerling.
But spend the last night before the tragedy with Mizzi Kaspar, who is said to was his real love. ( Actually he wanted to kill himself with her, but she denied and tried to save him. But no one listened to her)
When he took his leave he made a sign of a cross on her forehead ( something completely against his habit). After that he probably went directly to Mayerling.
