. ~~~ O B S E R V E R~~~ • Rhabdophis ceylonensis | Sri Lanka Keelback | නිහළුවා • • • Sri Lankan Keelback is one of the most beautiful snakes found in Sri Lanka, which is an endemic species too. Although their beautiful markings are faded away with the age, juvenile Rhabdophis ceylonensis is a real eye candy. They are called Sri Lanka Blossom Krait, because of this, even though they are not actually Kraits. • Previously named as Balanophis ceylonensis, recent discoveries shows it actually belongs to genus Rhabdophis. • They can be found in wet zone rainforests in Sri Lanka, like Singharaja, Kanneliya, Kithulgala, etc. • This is an iconic peeking from them, as they can flatten their throats, and show a hood-like exhibition, quite similar to what cobras do. They use it as a threatening sign for their predators and the prey. • They are categorized as a mildly venomous snake, but there are some reports that these snakes may have more venom than we think. The researchers are yet to conclude the venom category, but they might be categorized as moderately venomous species in future. Still, they are one of the most less-aggressive snakes we find in Sri Lanka. (May be that’s why we don’t have much records of B. ceylonensis bites). Be it Mildly or Moderately venomous, but still, they cannot kill a human, they do bot posses such strong venom. • This one was found at Kanneliya Forest Reserve, Sri Lanka. • • • #Balanophis #Rhabdophis #Rhabdophis_ceylonensis #snake #snakes #snakesofinstagram #reptile #reptiles #reptilesofinstagram #cuteanimals #reptilelove #reptileLover #wildlife #wildlifephotography #nature #naturephotography #naturegram #instanature #travel #travelphotography #instatravel #travelgram #igerslk #lka #sriLanka #endemictosrilanka #savenature #saveearth
Serendib Scops owl (Endemic) After an awesome night with Bay Owl expedition, next day morning we thought of trying this beautiful bird, Serendib Scops Owl. It is one of the latest additions to our resident birds list and making it more interesting it was found to be endemic to Sri Lanka. After going through the paper published by Mr. Deepal Warakagoda on finding this illusive owl, it really tempted me to see it. Finally we found a roosting place of this beauty. It really took me a few seconds to see it apart from those dried bamboo leaves. A master of camouflage.. love those beautiful big eyes. __________________ #owls #owllove #eliteowls #birds #birdwatching #ornithology #birdofsrilanka #birdsofinstagram #birdsinstagram #raptor #birdsofpray #klickers #greengrammers #bbcearth #bbcwild #bbcearthmagazine #natgeosrilanka #natgeoSL #naturephotography #natgeoyourshot #natgeowild #your_best_birds #yourshotphotographer #nikon #nikond7200 #nikkor200 -500 #serendibscopsowl #endemictosrilanka #eliteowls #owls #owllove #owlsofinstagram

Labeo heladiva Sudasinghe,Ranasinghe, Goonatilake and Meegaskumbura, 2018 This is a common freshwater fish previously identified as L.dussumieri, but shown to be a distinct species endemic to Sri Lanka. This species has a wide distribution in the low and mid-elevations, representing both the dry zone and wet zones of the Sri Lanka and it occurs primarily in rivers and also in reservoirs as well. This species is exploited by fishers, but does not specifically target it. Due to the wide geographical distribution L.heladiva should be considered as Least Concern. #labeoheladiva #labeo #newspecies #srilanka #endemictosrilanka #freshwaterfish #taxonomy #labeodussmieri #fishery #reddatalist #iucn #iucnredlist #leastconcern
Here we have reviewed the taxonomy of the genus Labeo in Sri Lanka. The species previously identified as Labeo dussumieri is shown to be a distinct species here we named as Labeo heladiva. Labeo lankae is identified as a valid species and an extant population recorded from Northern Sri Lanka. Redescriptions for both L.fisheri and L.lankae is provided. We also look at the phylogenetic relationship among the genus and according to that Sri Lankan Labeo do not form a monophyletic group. #labeo #labeofisheri #labeolankae #labeodussmieri #labeoheladiva #newspecies #criticallyendangered #criticallyendangeredspecies #endemictosrilanka #biodiversityhotspot #taxonomy #review #scientificpublication #zootaxa #srilanka

. ~~~ Retrospect ~~~ • Lyriociphalus scutatus - Hump-Nosed Lizard | ගැටහොඹු කටුස්සා • There are times in life, where you need to take a break and think, where you’re headed. Calculate what risks should you take, what paths should you go, and most importantly what YOU SHOULD leave behind. That’s where the light comes from. • Hump-Nosed Lizard is the largest agamid lizard resides in Sri Lanka. They’re the only members of the genus Lyriociphalus, which is an endemic genus to Sri Lanka. • They are distributed from low country wet zone to mid elevations in the up country of Sri Lanka. They prefer forests with a sound amount of canopy cover. • This is a adult male, showing off his Dewlap, which is a sign of a threat. Males have these dewlaps to attrack females, and to threaten the others. These guys also have the funniest run-up I’ve ever seen. That teetering run is really funny thing to watch. • This guy was found in Kanneliya Forest Reserve, Sri Lanka. • • • #HumpNosedLizard #Hump_nosed_lizard #Lyriocephalus_scutatus #Lizard #LizardLove #reptile #reptilelover #cuteanimals #animalsofinstagram #lizardsofinstagram #reptilesofinstagram #reptiles #agamid #backlit #wildlife #wildlifephotography #nature #naturephotography #naturegram #instanature #endemictosrilanka #srilanka #lka #dewlap #igerslk #savenature #saveearth #igbrilliant

Pseudophilautus asankai (Asanka's Shrub Frog | අසංකගේ පඳුරු මැඩියා) • • • Genus Pseudophilautus of the family Rhacophoridae is endemic to Sri Lanka and Western Ghats of India. Sri Lanka and Western Ghats are jointly considered as a Biodiversity Hotspot. These species play a big role in the biodiversity of these areas. • Most of the species in Pseudophilautus genus are endemic to Sri Lanka. Many of the species in this genus have already been declared as extinct. There are 79 species described and still there are more species to be described. • Above is one of the rarest species in the genus, P. asankai. It has been recorded only in the areas of Peak Wilderness Sanctuary (Sri Pada | Samanala | Adam's Peak). This species is categorized as endangered (EN) in IUCN redlist. • These species are threatened by humans mainly, as their habitats are continuously destroyed, and the climate change also effects them badly. • P. asankai can be found in different colors ranging from light gray to light blue. Some have black colored dots on their back. They're tiny in size. • This one was found at Peak Wilderness Sanctuary (Where else ?). • • • #SriLankanWildlife #frog #frogs #amphibian #amphibians #wildlife #endemictosrilanka #lka #srilanka #rareanimals #endofextinction #frogsofinstagram #wildlife #wildlifephotography #wildlifeonearth #nature #naturephotography #instanature #naturegram #travel #instatravel #travelgram #travelling #blue #macro #macrophotography #macro_spotlight #discoverearth #savenature #saveearth
