has become almost a tradition for The Galloping Gourmates, and Christmas 2015 was spectacular.
Setting off for
The Jugged Hare
49 Chiswell Street, London, EC1Y 4SA
This is temple to hunter-gathering, the #pub
and dining room is adorned with stuffed characters from the menu. Taking its name from an 18th century #English
recipe .Yet despite a display case of raw meat and bones, the effect is tasteful due to the quality of the furnishings. Beyond the bright bar, an open kitchen looks out on a sleek dining room of exposed brick and red leather banquettes. The #menu
is a celebration of meat – from crisp wild boar head croquettes to robust Herdwick mutton shank with #Suffolk
stew , and during the season plenty of Roast Whole Game Birds, though space is also found for #Billingsgate
fish. Drinks are classy too, with a well-organised, international wine list, and For #beer
lovers, as we are, on arrival had to sample The Jugged Hare's very own pale ale, brewed in conjunction with Sambrook’s brewery in #Battersea
, South London.
Starters included Dressed Dorset crab with French toast and Gamekeepers Pot Pie.
Mains was a delight
A Plater of
Roast whole Game birds , #widgeon
, and #woodcock
served traditionally with game chips, Savoy cabbage, bread sauce, liver pâté 'en croute', red wine jus.
Invariably two of us will always sample the #cheese
, and on this occasion was delightful. British cheeses, oatcakes and quince .
get it completely wrong when serving cheese, usually just out of the fridge, and not warmed , Crucially, #cheese
should be served at room temperature.
One of us always goes for the high calorie pudding and on this occasion was no exception, but it was a delight.
Sticky toffee pudding, salted caramel sauce.
Service was good, not spectacular , it was very busy, #christmas
parties etc. But overall a Great Night, and would highly recommend anyone for something different , pop in. @thejuggedhare
