So, this is pretty much what I do every time someone buys a single tiny print, or asks to hire me, or even asks to share my work with others. Ok, maybe I don’t literally rip all my clothes off, but it’s a pretty similar sense of elation. It gives me the drive to run an #ethicalbusiness
and I pride myself on giving a personal and thoughtful service in the way that only an #indiebusiness
can. And I like that people like that!
Because of this, I go the extra mile to seek out independent boutiques and craftspeople - not just so they can do a happy dance too, but because in doing so I am finding more original, bespoke and personal products and gifts for my family and friends, and I’m directly helping them to put food on the table for theirs.
If you do one thing this Christmas, support the little guys out there. Even if you buy #justacard
it can make the world of difference.

Menu re-design for wholefoods cafe Mama P based in Charelstown NSW. This vibrant small business specialises in healthy eats, guilt-free treats, vegan fare and pantry supplies made with local and ethically sourced ingredients. This is one of the works from a new set of collateral, comprising of gift vouchers, product labels, email signatures and more. -
Knowing that the cafe was due for an update of materials, Kylie approached me for a light re-branding exercise prior, which included simplification of the logo, a re-haul of the brand's typographic suite and styling direction. -
Through minor tweaks to the existing elements, we managed to create something fresh and further in-line with the current offerings of the business. You don't always need to re-invent the wheel to make an impact. Look forward to sharing more of these works with you soon. -

“Didi’s smile is contagious. She has a warmth about her. She radiates contentment and peace. We wish you could personally sit with her for awhile and experience the JOY she brings. Didi spins the fabric that make JOYN bags.” When you’re shopping for Christmas gifts this season, don’t forget to stop and ask #whomadethis

When it's wet. & hot. & you want to steal something... The Prodigy Jacket is your piece ✅ This bad boy is 20k/20k rated (super water resistant & breathable at the same time.) Fully taped, lighter than your wallet after the weekend, 4 way stretch that will belittle your boardies, rolls up into it's own bag AND it's even made of recycled coffee beans... Imma need a coffee after all tech talk ☕️️️♻️
Not to mention the overheads...⠀ Most of the time when people see our clothing they see that it is fairly, if not affordable prices for the amount of time, resources + skill that has gone into creating them 💛 Now + again though we have people questioning our prices, in fact sustainable fashion has a broad reputation for often being expensive + therefore inaccessible. Why is this? We believe it is because as a society we’ve been indoctrinated by fast fashion culture - we want more + more + more but for less + less + less. We concentrate on the part of the process that involves us - the transaction of purchasing an item + what effect that item will have on our wardrobe + lifestyle. Fast fashion doesn’t want you to consider the rest of that garment’s story - what resources went into it, who made it, who is making money from it, who is being exploited...
We’re so proud to be part of a slow fashion movement that is starting to change society’s perception of the impact that their wardrobes + buying decisions have on the rest of the world 🌍
Every single item we sell is handmade by our all female team for a LIVING WAGE in our cosy Brighton studio. We use vintage + end of roll fabrics so we are not contributing to the production of new textiles because these processes harm the environment. What we’ve listed in the second post image above only covers the processes involved in making a garment, not the rest of the activities that go into running + growing a business... .
So when you see a pricetag + you think ‘How much?!’ Take a look at the garment + it’s story + do the maths again 🧐
What impact do you want your purchases to have on society, especially this Christmas? Check out our current collection via the link in our bio 😍

Do you see the big picture? What are you buying - Is it something from this list?
1️⃣ Fashion & Retail - Australians buy 27kg avg of textiles each year, the global average is just 13kg so we are punching well and truely above our weight (get it). Your probably thinking there’s no way that’s possible, but keep in mind we chuck out 23kg in landfill. Most of which are synthetic clothes, like polyester, denim and nylon outfits. SYNTHETIC CLOTHES ARE ESSENTIALLY PLASTIC. Polyester takes approx 200 years to break into smaller pieces, which can then pollute more spaces n places. Yay more food for the fish. Wait what, fish are our food 😳
2️⃣Holidays & Travel - Aviation is a fossil fuel industry, planes use oil. Oil comes from mining. Electric planes are decades away. Flying is the new driving for many, cars and ground transport are becoming greener however the words aviation and eco friendly are like a nun watching 50 shades of grey. It’s not happening. In 1944 aviation somehow got the get out of jail card and was declared free of carbon tax. Times and the climate have changed, but the government is still so 2000 n late 💁🏼♀️ If a carbon or oset tax is introduced, airlines will have to uncover their dirty secret and let passengers know the real reason those return tickets to Europe are on sale, with a side of 4.5 tonnes of carbon. That's actually how much carbon is created Aus - Europe return. Belissimo 🥐
. 3️⃣ Electronics & Phones - Ewaste is full of crazy arse chemicals and must be disposded of correctly, yet approx 20% makes it to an actual recycling facility, When it is then most likely shipped to another country to “deal with it” and the lead poisoning that cames with it. Developed countries like Aus have strict laws to protect workers from hazardous materials and this makes it a cheaper option to export e-waste to places where those protections don't exist. Remember those gadgets are designed to break with 2-3 years. What’s the real cost of sweeping (burning) ewaste under the rug? 😷
40% of buying is done between Black Friday and Christmas. Making it the busiest and most polluting time of year. I’ll ask you again what are you really paying for? ⏳
It is almost time to email out our annual Cielo Christmas Gift Guide ❤️ It really is hard to decide what goes in the guide because we have so many special pieces, but our beautiful handwoven Rainbow Throw will definitely get a mention 🌈

Do you love a real tree at Christmas? I do love trees, in case you haven't realised that yet, possibly the huge amount of tree climbing posts and stories I do maybe a give away. I love following @mamalinauk
and her posts about #seasonsgreentings
she has researched and written a lot about buying more ethically at Christmas and has written about buying a tree that has been grown responsibly. It is really worth a read. It is very tempting every year to get all wrapped up, no pun intended, in the Christmas excitement. But being ethical and more conscious of the environment can be possible for Christmas also. If you really want something new try making with your children Christmas decorations rather than buying new.
Black Friday is this Friday. How about resisting the bargains and perhaps consider Buy nothing day instead?Or at least consider why are you buying it, do you really need it? Will it last? What's your thoughts on Black Friday and looking into a more ethical Christmas?
Launching on Friday 23rd November.🌸

A backpack with a story.
We really hope this post catches your eye with our exquisite Poppy backpack!
Today’s post is going to focus on the Poppy II Royal Backpack from our inspiring friends @beekeeperparade.
Made from brand new discarded fabric from Australia’s fashion industry into a super functional, durable yet stylish backpack that suits your daily needs…even for hiking!
This practice is known as upcycling, giving discarded products a new lease of life by making it into a new product of better environmental value (like this bag) from unwanted fabric from the fashion industry. Which reduces textile waste.
The last image shows the backpack’s truly unique upcycled pattered fabric.
I have included some photos of a hike which my husband and me embarked recently at The Grampians in Melbourne, Australia to share with you our versatile hiking trip with our friends. This features my very own bright pink backpack.

"As with any start-up there are ups and downs, whether it is operationally or personally. When you are trying to change a system and shift a segment of society’s way of thinking, the path is never simple. The toughest pill to swallow is realizing that things take time, especially when you are fighting for a cause so dear to you but at the same time so distant to the majority. Lucky for us we have been surrounded by amazing partners like Dorsu from the start that constantly remind us through their own journeys that hard work and grit pays off. We are a long way from a world that values communities over compensation but together we will get there!"
A single pair of RoHo sandals, like these Rafiki Blacks, takes upwards of 6 hours and just as many sets of hands to make. The process is anything but simple. While the beaders are painstakingly placing each bead in its. proper place, the leather and rubber cutters are hand cutting each shoe silhouette after carefully tracing them. And then begins the process of combining all these beautiful pieces into the finished product.
الحمدلله دائماً و أبداً
I have never been disappointed at an #ottolenghi
restaurant, but this branch in #shorditch
not only blew me away with the quality & flavor of food this afternoon, but the service was absolutely flawless.
They gave us extra food on the house (Ofcourse, that did it!), they smiled from the heart, and were just so warm and welcoming.. it literally felt like I was invited to a friend’s home (except, I paid. Yet, with joy!)
I think for a costumer to leave with that satisfaction & contentment should be every restaraunt manager’s ultimate goal. Rather than saving cost & making more.. Winning over your trust & loyalty.
Ever so grateful to have been able to enjoy this lunch, while many are out there begging in the streets not only with no money in their pockets, but no food in their tummies.
On that note.. and inspired by a friend’s kind and empathetic heart who literally makes friends with the homeless and invites them into her home to take showers and have meals, she listens to their stories and connects with their humanity. I urge you not to ignore those you see around you, begging for money or food. It hurts to acknowledge them because you know you can’t solve the larger hunger and poverty issue, but I urge you to take a few seconds to look their way, make eye contact and smile. If you have time, sit down and ask how they are. Ask what happened?
You’d be surprised to learn that he or she was once just like you and me, then.. circumstances changed, just as they could for any of us.. and there they are. Sleeping in the cold, with no shower, heater, friend.. or even food.
Today, and everyday.. pursuing my passion, owning warm clothing, going to restaurants, studying culinary arts & handing in my final research and project.. all I could think about was.. here we are, yet.. there they are. Starving.
This post is not sponsored, but it is in appreciation for this respectable business for that small piece of paper they gave me along with the bill (see last photo on this post). Donating to the homeless, which I believe is why they have so much blessings & baraka as a successful business.

How do you define "ethical business"? Is it the responsibility of the manufacturer, or the responsibility of the brand to make sure everyone involved in the process is treated well? Or should both parties take responsibility to make sure all is "ethical"? We are very interested to hear your thoughts and opinions about this!
Eeeek, a major moment in my life has happened this week, Brown’s has been featured in the pages of my favourite magazine @peppermintmagazine
in their latest issue number 40. Thank you so much to @kelleysheenan

Another day, another cup of tea 😂 Who else is a herbal tea drinker (aka hoarder)? 🙋🏼♀️ What’s your favourite brand?
This beautiful mama is Fatima. She lives in Somalia where expectant mothers face a 1 in 12 chance of dying in childbirth. Pregnant with her 7th baby (supermama!), she'll be giving birth at the Isha Maternal Health Centre - where on average, 1,000 women give birth each month.
Fatima received a birthing kit provided by our fabulous partners at @birthingkitfoundationaustralia
and World Vision, saying “Before attending the clinic, I was not aware how to prevent infections during birth,” Fatima said. “I have always been assisted by a traditional birth attendant, who cut the umbilical cord using a razor blade that she carried with her. With [my midwife] Luul’s help, I have learnt to tie the umbilical cord using a clean string. If I go into labour and cannot get to the clinic, I can still have a clean birth using the birthing kit.”
Your purchases have funded birthing kits for almost 7,000 mamas like Fatima to have a safer, cleaner birth - every organic muslin swaddle and bottle of our beautiful @courtneyandthebabes
x Mama Maya SERENE MAMA + BABY oil funds at least one birthing kit. MUCH more than just a stylish baby swaddle! 🤰🏽💛 x

's galvanizing talk on the #OptOutside
movement and looking ahead to #SB19Detroit
. 3 years into the movement, 15 million people have chosen to spend Black Friday outdoors with family and friends instead of shopping.
A few of our favorite statistics from the talk:
- On average, 95% of our life is spent indoors – 74 years based on life expectancy
- The typical child spends 4-7 minutes outside each day, less than the average inmate
