This weekend @the_artistic_alchemist
and I went to see the Charles White retrospective at @artinstitutechi.
Before going to this #exhibit
, Jeff was somewhat familiar with his work having a friend in college who was very interested and I didn’t recall studying him in undergrad. We were glad we chose just this one exhibit this time because the where we started and where we ended after seeing it were hugely different places.
First of all, please go see this one (it’s up until September 9). It’s rare I stand in front of #artwork
where nearly all of it knocks me off my feet. I’ll provide the highlights of what I noticed in his work which barely scratch the surface of giving you an idea of the #experience
of seeing it. Technically, White is amazingly skilled. The exhibit features some of his drafts and studies and they all look like they could be finished works. Something being finished or unfinished is difficult to judge for #critics
alike, but with White there was a common thread through all his styles, eras, and processes that made them special. White was extremely successful (my opinion) in creating emotion in the faces of his subjects that was filling realized. He did this through line making and #gesture
and some of the most beautiful attention to #color
I’ve ever seen. There is no subject he portrayed that he didn’t seem to “know” fully or at least emotionally. (Continued in comments 👇)
