~ Image was shot after hours with permission ~ I met Jim Bishop today. He is eccentric, and not like anyone I’ve met before. Some people find him offensive, and there are signs throughout his property warning those who won’t be very forgiving to his personality. He also amazing, with incredible vision, tenacity and passion. Jim bought this property for $450 at age 15, with money he earned doing yard work and also offering loans to a local drunk. He intended to build a family cabin. 50 years later, he is still present on the property actively building, placing one Rock after another despite a 2018 fire, the recent loss of his wife due to cancer, and challenges with Parkinsons. To date his castle is, he claims, the largest one-man-made structure in the world. And quite honestly, it’s incredible. It’s quirky and every bit as eccentric as the man who conceived it. Climbing the towers is not for the rambunctious or faint of heart. But if you get a chance, please do visit. Offer a generous donation to support this artist and his life long ambition.
