When the Spanish began their colonization of the Americas, one of their main priorities was converting the local populations to Catholicism. Thus, wherever the conquistadors went, missionaries were soon to follow. The Church and Convent of the Dominican became the first Catholic building constructed in the New World in 1510. In 1538, it became the first University in the Western Hemisphere.
