AfriCat is a non profit Namibian organization that strives to mitigate Human-Wildlife Conflict on commercial farmland. They assist with the long term conservation of Namibia’s large carnivores: the cheetah; the beautiful leopard; the fascinating brown hyena and of course the icon of Africa: the lion. Animal agriculture is very important for this country, but unfortunately the dark side of the coin is that famers are taking more and more land, and wildlife have less and less. Big cats have easy preys when attacking livestock, but farmers are killing them fast as they are messing with their business. Hunting, trapping and shooting these predators is detrimental. AfriCat provides solutions to the clash between Namibia's farmers and predators through farmer assistance, education, research and welfare. They are doing a fantastic job! . . . . . #travel #traveling #travelgram #travelphoto #travelphotography #africat #bigcats #bigcat #cheetah #wild #wildlife #wildlifephotography #wildlifeconservation #nature #naturelovers #naturephotography #holiday #adventure #discover #explore #roadtrip #roadtrippin #camping #campingtrip #beautifuldestinations #thisisafrica #explorenamibia #namibianbeauty #namibia #vegan
"When travelling in Owambo, you will witness the insane balancing skills of the Owambo people. The Owambo women carry everything on their heads from pots to stacks of firewood. Maybe you'd even want to try it out yourself! In this picture an Owambo woman is carrying omagongo, the traditional marula beer brewed at the annual Omagongo Festival. The marula fruit is vital to the livelihood of the people in the north." The dragon of the nama karoo! Girdled lizards often inhabit crevices on rocky outcrops and can be found throughout most of Namibia. #explorenamibia #reptilesofnamibia #fieldherping
Sossusvlei, the enchanted land.
Dwarf beaked snakes are certainly a treat. While they are not considered to be dangerous they do mimic the venomous horned adder. #explorenamibia #snakesofnamibia #fieldherping
A few tips for photographic people in Namibia: - Make friends with the locals. If you're planning to take photos of them in their private surroundings, it’s always best to have a local guide take you around to converse with them and overcome the barrier of photographer versus subject. - Always ask before you photograph someone. Not everybody likes to have his or her picture taken, so avoid conflict by asking first. - Some people will expect payment for having their picture taken. This includes the Himba and Herero people, who still dress traditionally and are thus worthwhile subjects. They spend considerable time and effort on their appearance and if you ‘steal’ their image without asking their permission and offering payment, it might make them angry and put you at a disadvantage. The best option is to ask them first and agree on a price before taking the photo. #thisisnamibia . . . #namibia #travel #africa #safari #instatravel #wild #photograph #travel #safari #instatravel #travelblogger #holiday #lodge #travelafrica #travelnamibia #explore #wanderlust #explorenamibia #culture #photographytips #photography #people

There are vast ares in Namibia know as lichen fields. It looks like it would be impossible for anything to grow there. If you look closer you see it is covered with "dead" lichen. However, when it rains (or the lichen is sprayed with water as in this case) the lichen spring back into life and gather as much water as they can. #travel #travelafrica #freelancetravelwriters #namibia #freelancewriter #namibiatourism #namibiatravel #travelwriter #travelguide #roadtripnamibia #namibiawildlife #explorenamibia #freelancewriting

"It was my colleague who first introduced me to the funky little shop adjacent to the Total Garage on Kamanjab’s main road. She called it the Atatatata shop, referring to the wooden sign with that word which hangs over the entrance of the shop. Of course, any Namibian would tell you Atatatata is a bit of slang that basically means wow! or hectic! Or even: you are in big trouble, mister. The steps leading up to the shady stoep in front of the shop are covered with Namibian number plates, plus a lone South African one. Bottles hanging from the corrugated roof chime cheerily in the breeze. The stoep harbours a medley of objects. Treasures. Two wire-and-bead sheep, thigh-high, are well camouflaged between the grey concrete floor and the tables and chairs set out for weary travellers. “Look at the sheep: she went to the beach for the December holidays, but she lost her bottoms!” Sure enough, the woolly creature wrought from wires wears a bright red bikini top, fastened around its neck in a ludicrous way." We saw a lot of those cute birds at the river banks in Caprivi, Namibia. Bee-eater are very social and are often sitting next to each other on a branch. This was my best shot of a white-fronted bee-eater (witkapbijeneter) which was quite a challenge because it was taken from a wobbly boat. ~ #beeeater #whitefrontedbeeeater #bijeneter #birdwatching #birds #naturephotography #wanderlust #vroegevogels_bnnvara #birdphotography #beautifulnamibia #onlyafrica #neverstopexploring #nuts_about_birds #etosha #ig_namibia #wildlife #birdlovers #birds_adored #bird_brilliance #vogelbescherming #birds_bees_flowers_n_trees #birdlife #feather_perfection #explorenamibia #nutsaboutbirds #birdfreaks #africannature #birdnerd #thisisnamibia #caprivistrip

"The dune sea south of Swakopmund is thwarted by the river, leaving exploration of the curvaceous beauties for another day. We drove into the Dorob National Park, the central park in the Namib Desert, accompanied by the pocket of mist for which Swakop is well-known. Although often cause for much muttering, the mist bank is appreciated in the summer months when the rest of the country scorches under a vengeful Namibian sun. It is also valued for its life-giving properties. The hardy flora and fauna we were beginning to notice only exist because of this precious moisture that drifts in from the coast, thanks to the cold Benguela Current that flows up the south-western coastline of Africa to laze contentedly further north." The one thing that all Namibians have in common? Getting excited about the first rain drops of the season. We captured the moment on one of our glass tables at Utopia. Aside from our boutique hotel with standard and luxury rooms, we also have an on-site restaurant. How about a refreshing and healthy summer juice or smoothie? #restaurant #namibia #windhoek #rain #rainyseason #raininnamibia #boutiquehotel #travelnamibia #explorenamibia #instatravel
