We're fortunate in Clayoqout to have at least 3 areas where rafts of Sea Otters gather. This particular raft is made up of females and young Sea Otters. It acts as a nursery; a place where the young are raised. I've written about the relationship between kelp (the brown algae - or seaweed - seen around the animals) and Sea Otters before. This image highlights how important it is for resting Sea Otters in our area. They roll up in the fronds of the kelp to secure themselves. As the kelp is anchored to the sea bed they remain in place. Where there are large kelp beds, there can be large groups of Sea Otters. So... how many Sea Otters do you count?
Cattle Point sunrise just over a week ago. With all the fires burning across BC right now, you'd be lucky to see more than half a km out with all the thick smoke. At the beach life is different. Time doesn’t move hour to hour but from mood to moment- Mussels, star ⭐️ fish, sea urchins and anemones were just a few of our finds while exploring the beautiful tide pools at Botany Bay and Botanical Beach this week... #travelbugs01
