'Jon Snow Knows Nothing' and that's a universal #fact
He's a mighty good warrior but certainly not the best tactician. He's no match to a #Tyrion
or a #Cersei
. His emotionally influenced decision making #LITERALLY
got him killed. Luckily for him, it was in a fictional world of dragons and magic, so he came back. But in reality one has to survive before they can #Thrive
And that's the essence of Circle of Competence. It means exactly what you think it means, i.e., defining the outer limit of one's abilities and operating within them.
It's so simple that we unnecessarily complicate it.
We all know what we can do and what we can't do.
Jiro Ono makes mean #Sushi
but there isn't a level low enough in professional #Tennis
where he can qualify. Frank ocean's #Music
will suspend you into a dreamy realm but he won't last a second in a #Jujitsu
grapple with Jocko. These people, just like everyone else, have their own #Unique
Circles of Competence.
Charlie Munger, the god of investing, owes all his accumulated wealth to this #MentalModel
. He precisely defines the perimeter of his #Circle
. Whenever he encounters something new, he uses the inversion way of thinking and assumes the worst, identifies the potential culprits, and then just avoids the things he doesn't know enough about by staying within the boundaries of his #Competence
Though, the real #challenge
lies in identifying the things that we think we know well but actually don't.
So, how does one stay vigilant of this trap?
Easy. If they have to ask this about something, then they have already answered the question. (Don't do it)
Come back to Jon. Remember when he lost his mightiest weapon to the ultimate foe just because he wanted to prove the existence of that foe to his 'fellow humans' in the first place.
Well, he did that on the assumption that he would be able to convince the other humans. But convincing people to do things they are ardently against has never been his #Skill
. If that were so, his comrades wouldn't have mutinied against his command and stabbed him to death.🤷♂️
He mistook familiarity of doing something for competency in that thing. And paid the Piper.
