“I was walking along the road with two friends – the sun went down – I felt a gust of melancholy – suddenly the sky turned a bloody red...I stood there trembling with anxiety – and I felt a vast infinite scream through nature.” -Edvard Munch on “The Scream” (1893)
The closer I get to graduation, the darker the clouds of existential dread become. There are SO MANY questions with no answers in sight. What next? What’s my life’s purpose? How did teen angst follow me into my 20s? But before I send myself into an anxiety-induced downward spiral, I remind myself that I must be fully present in this moment and take it for what it is: an opportunity to work towards a favorable outcome. Rather than make an empty promise about optimism, I’ll tell you that realism is the best way to combat unanswered questions. Uncertainty is inevitable, but you can find solace in being certain that the sun will rise and fall and you have every moment in between to figure things out.
The value of realism is quite an interesting insight to gain from a post-impressionist painting, huh?
