Like nearly everyone I'm sure I have dark moments, or days, or weeks or even longer where I question my worth and, frankly, fall off the path to a greater or lesser degree. For the last few weeks my workouts have been sporadic, I haven't prioritised BJJ over other things and made some poor dietary choices. It's all relative though - I've still been getting up at 5:00, doing a lot of work on Active Supplements, being a husband and father and doing my day job. Plus "sporadic" workouts does not mean "zero" workouts.⠀ ⠀ As always - it comes down to the simple phrase: discipline equals freedom. Something different for yall.. Core strength, stability and endurance is a big part of my training regimen. I usually choose 3-4 movements, both dynamic and static, that targets the upper, lower abdomen and the obliques. INTERMITTENT FASTING FOR MUSCLES . . Good? Bad? . . Fasting lowers insulin, making us more sensitive to its effect when insulin does eventually rise with feeding. Insulin also helps with the uptake of amino acids and protein (Dimitriadis G et al.). One could assume that combining IF with a sufficient intake of complete protein would optimize absorption and therefore muscle growth. That, however, would still be an assumption. ASSUME makes an ASS out of U and ME. . A study published in the Journal of Translational Medicine (Moro T et al.) observed a group following 16-8 IF and a group with no fasting protocol over an eight week training period. The groups were matched for training and overall calorie consumption. Although there are limitations to this study, they conclude the IF could be a useful intervention for athletes looking to lose fat and preserve muscle mass. Important message: IF had NO detrimental effect on muscle mass. . Last year, Tinsley GM et al. compared two groups - one with a 4-hour feeding window and one without - during an eight-week training program. Muscle growth was similar in both groups, but the fasted group experienced SLIGHTLY greater strength gains - an interesting observation when considered in conjunction with the findings of a 2011 study (Van Proeyen K et al.) which showed increased exercise intensity in subjects training in the fasted state. It’s a stretch to suggest that training while fasted could increase intensity and strength (which are integral to muscle growth) but it’s certainly encouraging as it shows that fasting is NOT detrimental to training performance OR muscle growth. . My training is more intense during the fasted period. I’ve also put on more muscle than ever since I started IF (two years) -  BUT - thats just me, i’m weird, and there are certainly other factors at play (more sleep, less alcohol, more knowledge) . . I’m not going to say IF is MORE beneficial for muscle growth (even though that's my personal belief) - I don’t have the data. BUT - there is one concrete conclusion from this - Intermittent fasting IS NOT detrimental to muscle growth! . . Aaaand breathe! 😜 Happy Friday! 💪🏼🙌 . .

I like doing a quick set or rep here and there while resting between sets to stay productive (as long as it will not affect the main exercise I’m doing). This is between some hamstring curls, so while I’m resting up I can quickly do some wide-bar pull ups. In fact, it is 20 times more effective than Leucine in regards to preserving lean mass. .
