Today, the world of wrestling has lost another legendary athlete, and I'll tell ya! The number of deaths of athletes in pro-wrestling just keeps growing, and it will not fucking stop, and we're talking about 100+ of them...dead! So anyway, today is Oct. 18, 2018 and a true legend. Dick Slater was a pro-wrestler who wrestled in the 1970s, 1980s, and mid-1990s for various promotions including Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling and WCW. He began wrestling with Mike Graham at Robinson High School in Tampa, Florida. He attended the University of Tampa with Paul Orndorff. From there he began wrestling in Championship Wrestling from Florida and GCW. He worked as a booker in Knoxville, Tennessee after Ron Fuller sold his promotion to Jim Barnett. He wrestled in Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling (later WCW), where he appeared on the first Starrcade. He also worked in Mid-South Wrestling Association where he was managed by Dark Journey. He made some trips to the World Wrestling Council in Puerto Rico. He wrestled briefly in the WWF as a babyface under a "Rebel" gimmick but soon returned to WCW. He wrestled there til his back injury which ended his career. He was 1-time NWA Brass Knuckles champion, 2-time NWA Florida Heavyweight champion, 4-time NWA Florida Tag-Team champion (1with Dusty Rhodes, 1 with Stan Vachon, 1 with Toru Tanaka, and 1 with Johnny Weaver), 2-time NWA Florida Television champion, 4-time NWA Southern Heavyweight champion, and 1-time NWA United States Tag-Team champion with Killer Karl Kox.
In June 2004 he was convicted for the stabbing of his ex-girlfriend Theresa Halbert. He was sentenced to 1-year house arrest and 2 years of probation. He blamed the incident on influence from painkillers. On Oct. 18th (which is today), it was reported by wrestling trainer Les Thatcher that 67-year-old Dick Slater had died. .
