It's that time of the week again....Wednesday's Influential Woman! Today we bring you Raymonde de la Roche. Roche was the very first woman in the world to solo an airplane and the first to hold a pilot's license. Ramonde was born August 22, 1882 in Paris, France. In 1909, she was dining with French aviation pioneer, Charles Voisin, who encouraged her to learn to fly. Inspired by Wilbur Wright's demonstration in 1908 and Voisin's encouragement, Roche decided to pursue flight training.
On March 8, 1910, Roche became the first licensed female pilot in the world with the Aero-Club of France issuing her license #36
. Like most pioneering women in aviation, she did not stop there. She participated in airshows and meets across the European region, as well as Egypt. In July of 1910, she was at the week long Reims Meet in France and crashed her aircraft and was seriously injured. After two years of recovery, she was fit to fly again. In 1913, Raymonde entered and won the Femina Cup (a 4 hour non-stop long distance race). Not only did Roche compete in races and perform in airshows, but she also set the women's altitude record in 1919 with a height of 15,700'. Her passion for aviation, and skill as an engineer, led her to pursue a test pilot's position at the Le Crotoy airfield to become the first female test pilot in the world. Unfortunately, this lead to her death when the aircraft she was testing along with another pilot went into an uncontrollable nose dive on its approach to landing.
Being the first female in the world to every pilot an aircraft solo and be issued a pilot's license is quite a feat. She was the very first to bust through those social boundaries that said women can't fly. Because of her, many other women around the world were inspired to follow their dreams of flying. We all have Raymonde de la Roche to thank for being the first to lead the way!
