“We’re emotional illiterates. We’ve been taught about anatomy and farming methods in Africa. We’ve learned mathematical formulas by heart. But we haven’t been taught a thing about our souls. We’re tremendously ignorant about what makes people tick”

Feel so old (2018.12)
For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars make me dream- Vincent Van Gogh. ⭐️
Byblos, Jbeil, Mont-Liban
An old cinema theatre in downtown Beirut. Plans for it were put on hold when civil war broke out and many of the structures in the complex outside “The Egg” were destroyed in the conflict, partially or entirely. In the decades that followed, the structure was reused in a variety of ways, but always remained a large and monolithic work, much grander in scale relative to its surroundings than it was ever meant to be.
Locals are conflicted about the role “The Egg” should play in the next phase of the area’s urban development, debating the merits of destroying or restoring it. The bullet-riddled cinema theatre is situated in downtown Beirut between state-of-the-art buildings and upscale stores, nicely merging the old with the new, the traditional with the modern, and the past with the present.
This war-beaten architectural experiment in downtown Beirut is known as “The Egg” (or “The Dome”). It was designed by Lebanese architect Joseph Philippe Karam in 1965.
It’s an old abandoned cinema theatre which was initially intended to be part of a large commercial downtown complex, the Beirut City Centre. It has been everything from a movie theatre to a bomb shelter to a water tank.
