Today marks three months from my last full day on the #AT
this year. Here, I was so happy to reach New England and escape the horrific mosquitoes of NY. The next day I would be in an ER in Great Barrington with what turned out to be a massive and hike-ending bacterial infection that had been silently festering away in my foot. At least I got to spend my last bit of trail time with my favorite Penguin!
All in all this has been a fairly brutal year: 2 planned thru hikes ending prematurely due to injury both resulting in ridiculous unplanned associated expenses, family issues resulting in having to obtain a restraining order against a sibling and writing the rest off to preserve my mental health, so much frustration and angst and not just a little ‘wtf.. why me??’
I could just give up. Sell the van for something less gas-thirsty and start clocking back in to make someone else richer as I get more spirit-poor but financially solvent.
But... fuck all that. Despite all the hardship, misery, and trouble, I still managed to get in about 2,000 miles on trail this year between the Florida, Pinhoti, Benton MacKaye, and Appalachian Trails, and adventuring is not just what I want to do, it is who I am. I’d rather spend another 6 months wet and cursing my life in a tent than behind a desk looking out the window.
I have a ton of new content to add to the website, so I’ll be sheltering in place in SoCal til the CDT in April, doing as many local adventures as possible in the meantime. Already counting down the days til the next one, it can’t get here soon enough 💖
