Forever channeling Claire from
Six Feet Under 🙆🏼♀️💀 This was partially inspired by a chat I had with @viacalligraphy
earlier this week / partially happened because I’ve spent 50% of my week being a seasonal-affective-disorder emo and needed to letter emotional things 😂
This quote comes from a scene in a tv show where a misunderstood artsy teenage girl (🙋🏼♀️) is talking to her high school guidance counselor, sooo I relate to it pretty hard. When I was younger, I was constantly frustrated with not fitting into any of the options that seemed to be laid out on the table for us all. No school program or job ever felt right, but anything else was always shrouded in mystery. And, being a millennial, my college and early career days were during that awkward transitional phase where the internet went from being a big confusing anonymous ocean to a very small world where we all hang out. Social media “came to power” so to speak and all of a sudden, an exponential array of new options were born. I complain about the soul sucking nature of social media & the internet often, but they are part of the reason that I get to work for myself (that, and many years of failures & rejections turning me into a cold hard business bitch). We live in a super weird time where life is easier than it’s ever been, yet we’re all a little bit sadder because of the computers in our pockets. Before social media, I often felt like I was born in the wrong time because my dream life is just being Jack in Titanic and traveling the world on ships while drawing ladies in my fabulous leather bound sketchbook (minus the dying at sea part). But if I HAD been born in 1900 I would a) be dead by now and b) not have been able to harness the power of the internet to actually get to be my own boss.
So yes, 2019 is a weird time to be alive, but the best part about it is this: If the path that’s right for you doesn’t exist, you can literally create it.
Phew. That was a really long winded way of saying if you’re looking to start a creative biz yourself, I’m doing a Live Q&A with @viacalligraphy
this Sunday at 8pm. So tune in, take notes, and get ready to take your career path into your own hands 💃🏼
