In order for us to progress, become fitter, stronger and more muscular, we need to push ourselves to do more than what's 'comfortable'. Applying more stress to our muscles and cardiovascular system is what causes adaptation. However, if you experience actual joint pain or discomfort during certain exercises, it's probably not wise to 'push through the pain'. A little rule - if it hurts, don't do it.
You're never too unfit, too young or too old to do it. Regardless of your age, gender or role in life, you can benefit from regular physical activity.
