I ended up taking a red eye back last night instead of Saturday, partially due to feeling like I really couldn’t miss more work and partially because I was freaking out that my body started having all of these aches and pains a few days *after* running (hip and neck pain too? really??). @zocdoc found me a #sportsmedicine appointment because #physicaltherapy was booked- though I felt kind of like an idiot when I got there because things were finally starting to improve. He gave me a printout of hip exercises that I think will be useful, and suggested I go back to ibuprofen pills instead of cream for this more acute issue. I’m annoyed I didn’t think to do that earlier, but I’ll start now. Also now seemed like a good time to start my @vidafitnessdc month trial, if by good time I mean after a red eye, work, grocery shopping, and winter weather... I literally had to walk past my gym or the city pool to get to either metro stop, but for some reason a 30 minute commute to do those things made more sense?? Whatever, I don’t argue with motivation in whatever form it takes- I defied the odds and did the thing. The thing turned out to be two one mile treadmill stints with a #sevenminuteworkout in between, plus a whole lotta #foamrolling . Running didn’t hurt my shins, but generally I’m not sure my body loved it (I’ve always found the mile distance torturous though, and think I would have enjoyed it more outside). I was really looking forward to trying my #aquajogging belt in the #endlesspool , but while super warm and fun to be in was sadly just a touch too shallow to do it properly. I did a slightly modified version for about 15 minutes, but that movement seemed to hurt my shins the most! Of all things! I don’t think it was the muscles, but rather the resistance of the water against the skin- touching it is still the biggest pain. So weird though! After training my legs yesterday until muscle failure, foam rolling today allowed me to get a good session of incline running in. Foam rolling helped for some quick relief but now my calves are so sore to even touch! Climbing in and out this fire truck for 24 hrs is pretty laughable to watch. 😂 Do you foam roll? You need to hit it hard with loaded exercises, progress every workout (progressive overload - you need to force your body to continuously adapt to heavier tension in order to gain muscle) and eat in a calorie surplus. Using unloaded exercises as your MAJOR and ONLY exercise for glutes is exactly the same as doing bicep curls with no weights and expecting them to grow. It's just not going to happen. Choose exercises that will engage your glutes the most, to get more out of your sessions. Choose exercises such as squats, deadlifts, hip thrusts, glute bridges and all of their variations to hit your glutes hard without plateauing. That booty won't grow as much as you want it too without them. If you'd like to use more isolated exercises that's fine too but figure out a way to load those smaller exercises so you are not wasting your time. Six months ago, I had no idea how I was going to make ends meet. I had quit my corporate job after 7 years, making the ultimate decision that my mental and physical health was far more important than any amount of money they could pay me. Foam rolling (FR), sometimes called [self-] myofascial release, has become firmly entrenched in the health and fitness industries. Often touted for its pain-reducing powers, it's a common sight in the general population during warm-ups to improve performance, or after workouts to relieve exercise-related muscle soreness. It's also popular in physical therapy as an adjunct to treatment for patellofemoral pain syndrome, runner's knee and hip bursitis. . FR is frequently claimed to increase range of motion (ROM) and therefore be an effective addition to flexibility/mobility training programmes. However, the literature shows these increases in ROM are mostly transient. One of the more popular hypotheses to explain acute increases in ROM after FR is removal of restrictions due to myofascial adhesions, but the evidence to support this rationale is scant at best. It's more likely that neural mechanisms are responsible. . Most FR studies focused on myofascial tissues. Very little research exists on the effect of FR on passive, non-contractile tissues like the ITB (i.e., fascia). Researchers set out to address this gap in the literature by comparing FR on the gluteals to FR on the ilio-tibial band (ITB) and to a control (no FR). . They concluded that FR over the glutes can produce immediate increases in hip adduction passive ROM, which is similar to findings on other studies of FR on skeletal muscle tissue. FR on the ITB did not produce a significant increase however. The conventional theory of myofascial adhesions therefore needs to be re-evaluated. . Further study on the effects of different frequencies and intensities of FR, and comparisons of FR equipment, is warranted.

Have you ever wondered why you can’t touch your toes? The answer is your FASCIA. Fascia is incredibly important for a healthy body. It looks a bit like:- the white stringy yuck on a raw chicken breast. It’s like a spider web in the body. Why we need to keep our fascia healthy? 1: improved body alignment 2: increased blood flow 3: reduced risk of injury 4: less pain in the joints etc.... 5: improved sports performance (this is why I’m always STRESSING the importance of yoga - if you work out you have to take care of your fascia). Fascia connects all connective tissues (that means the muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, and blood). Fascia holds together the ENTIRE body. When fascia is healthy, it’s flexible, supple, and it glides. Unhealthy fascia can feel tight and form restrictions, so why you can’t touch those toes. What causes unhealthy fascia? 1: a sedentary lifestyle (you MUST move daily) 2: bad posture ( I mention posture in my book) 3: dehydration (water keeps us healthy & youthful)! 4: overusing or injuring your muscles (I think this is what I’ve done to my leg & why it’s not healing 🤦‍♀️) 5: a bad diet 6: lack of sleep 7: stress When you have healthy fascia YOU FEEL OPEN - you can move in ways that don’t feel restricted (like when you are tight, you are restricted) this is down to fascia. A few important things to build healthy fascia are: 1: of course yoga. 2: foam rolling 3: exercise 4: sit in a sauna 6: cold therapy 7: drink heaps of water 💦 8: eat a healthy diet So if you feel super tight - it’s your FASCIA- take steps to take care of it. Some days you have to go off plan, in spite of what the schedule says, training will serve no benefit ... If you train lots, you should understand your body and where it is on any given day. ... Today, mine is running on empty due to a couple of tough sessions yesterday 😓 The sessions themselves weren’t the problem though, instead a distinct lack of sleep, dehydration and a manic day at work served to run the battery down ... I’ve trained enough to know that more training would only serve to add non-functional fatigue so Instead of choosing nothing, I’ve decided to grab a quick #powernap 😴 and spend 15-20 mins #stretching and #rolling rather than doing nothing; this will aid recovery and should have me back on track tomorrow ... With this drill/pattern you will improve footwork and ball control, but only if you’re consistent‼️ . 📝How To: . 1️⃣ Take a touch with the outside of foot to the side of you. 2️⃣ Cruyff the ball back to center. 3️⃣ Still using the same foot, drag the ball back and then push it forward with the inside of your foot. 4️⃣ Then perform an L move. 5️⃣ After completing the L move, stop the ball with your other foot and repeat on the other side. . This should be a continuous movement. Start off slow and PERFECT the MOVEMENT before you ramp up the speed. Drop your ego‼️ .
