I remember struggling to find words to express my thoughts as a teenager.
My dad told me I should pic one word to learn in the dictionary every day. I did that for a while but soon got bored. This led me to reading. The first book I read from front to back on my own without it being a school assignment was 1984. The second book I read was The Coldest Winter Ever. This opened up a new hobby and I’d literally make a point to read 1 book a week. From Who Moved My Cheese, Good to Great, Tipping Point, Decoded, What the Dog Saw, 7 pillars, Tuesday’s with Morris, the alchemist, on and on. Between 2000 - 2004, I probably read over 200 books, and I believe that time period activated the person I am today. Eckart Tole, Malcom Gladwell, Damon John, Russell Simmons, Jay Z, and Gary Vee all rolled together.
I always look at 2007 as the year I started building because that’s when I took over the barbershop. What I’ve realized is ... I’ve been BUILDING my personal brand since 2000 when I started reading. I now know absorbing and learning is the foundation for everything. If you’re not willing to learn from others you limit your ability to grow.
I know longer struggle for words, but I’m always looking for better words. I don’t want to ever stop learning, improving and BUILDING.
