Don’t Judge. When my brother and I were little, our winters were stunning. Endless snow, winter games and shimmer. Shimmer of the sunshine on the frozen snow and temperatures of down to -29C.
We loved it. Winters to me are most beautiful in my village, especially when it’s caressed by bright moonlight.
But it’s cold, freezing, harsh and unforgiving. At times, deadly.
Today was a beautiful day here in Salisbury. So sunny and warm. But we too are approaching winter; it’s November next week.
As the cold nights are approaching, I keep thinking of this one young lady I met a few months ago. I was in Poole, attending a paediatric first aid course. As I finished my course, I had a couple of hours to kill before my husband picked me up.
I was sitting in Starbucks; I was warm, cosy and having my perfect flat white. It was raining outside. I looked across and I saw a young homeless woman being harassed. As she was sitting down, she got kicked by a young man who was demanding something off her. He left, she wept. It broke my heart. I had to do something.
Luckily there was a Superdrug next door. I went in and bought her a bag full of sanitary products, wet wipes, some make up, toothpaste and a couple of toothbrushes and a few bottles of water.
I couldn’t stop thinking of my teenage son. This young lady was someone’s child too.
I wanted her to have something just for her. Something that the man couldn’t take away from her.
She was so grateful, so humble.
I am so worried about the upcoming winter. These people are on our streets because of mental health illnesses, traumas, bereavement, wars...because of their personal problems and reasons.
Please help if you can; it really doesn’t take much to be kind or to help someone.
Please don’t judge. It’s easy and lazy to judge. Think how you can help. Ask.
