La Catalana is an amazing Spanish tapas restaurant in San Jose. They offer a slew of tapas or small appetizers that are sure to whet your appetite. Because they are small, you'll need to order quite a few to fill your stomach. We ordered the following:
Pescaditos fritos $7
Fried Smelts seasoned with salt and garlic - If there was more salt added, it would have tasted better.
Calamares a la Romana $10
Fried Calamari seasoned in salt and spices along with a house salsa rosa - I've had better fried calamari, but it was nicely fried with not too much batter.
Pulpo con Pimiento $9
Sautéed octopus with smoked paprika - Simply wonderful.
Imported blood sausage, tomato, onion - This one was kind of in the middle. Not bad but not something I would eat on a daily basis.
Chorizo al Tinto $9
Spanish cured chorizo / marinated in red wine - Super tasty and flavorful.
Paellas Arros Negre $22
Spanish Bomba rice with a combination of squid, calamri, shrimp, squids ink, allioli / 22 per person - Amazing Paellas that is super tasty, hearty, and filling. The whole dish looks black as everything but the shrimp is covered in squid ink. It's a bit salty, so you'll need to plenty of water to wash it down.
Overall, the tapas were amazing. They were overall a bit salty and greasy, but they certainly tasted good. Add a Paellas and you've got yourself an amazing Spanish meal! The restaurant gets super packed on Thursday through Sunday, so make sure you make a reservation before coming. The establishment is super small, so it can feel a bit claustrophobic. Give La Catalana a try and enjoy the flavors of Spain! #foodielicious @jtong2808 @joyfl_ #spanishfood #tapas
