Macanese Egg Tart 🇲🇴
A hybrid between a pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tart) and an English custard tart, Macanese egg tarts have a reputation as the most delicious egg tarts you can find! Invented in Macau by English baker Andrew Stow, it consists of the light, flakey pastery shell and crème brûlée top of a pastel de nata, but with a sweet custard filling more like an English custard tart. These delicious snacks are now an icon of Macau, with Andrew's bakery outlets on Macau's list of tourist attractions and selling 13,500 to 14,000 tarts a day.
These custard tarts are best eaten as soon as they come out of the oven when they're piping hot. They can now be found all over Macau, although the original and widely considered best Macanese egg tarts come from one of Andrew's bakeries (Lord Stow's bakery), which now has serveral branches across Macau as well as bakeries in Hong Kong, Japan and The Philippines. I tried one at the Hong Kong bakery, the verdict? It's the best sweet pastry snack I've ever tasted 😋
