Do you feel confused when doing your groceries?
I know how crazy wide selection each store has and how hard is to follow all the health trends that just keep coming and changing pretty frequently.
Spring is around the corner and it is always a nice time of the year, because farmers market open and you can get your goodies there.
If you buy them in a grocery store keep your eye on the codes:
•ORGANIC: 5 digit code starts with a 9 (As you can see on the right lemon)
-It is much more nutrient dense
-It has more vitamins and antioxidants, and they were grown without pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers, or irradiation. •CONVENTIONAL: 4 digit code (As you can see it on the lemon on the left)
-It was conventionally grown with dangerous pesticides, chemicals, herbicides.
These are linked to the following health risks:☝️
-Skin, eye, lung irritation
-Reproduction and birth defects
If possible avoid the non-organic produce or try to buy it at a Farmers Market where it is gonna have a lower chance to contain pesticides.
It might be expensive to buy organic from everything, but what you can do is to follow the list of Clean Fifteen and Dirty Dozen.
This list is made by EWG every year, including the least (Clean Fifteen) and the most contaminated (Dirty Dozen) fruits and vegetables. •
It is safer to buy conventionally grown from the produce that is listed on the Clean Fifteen list, such as avocados, asparagus, cauliflower.
The Dirty Dozen list includes the veggies and fruits that have the highest number of pesticides and it is the least safe to buy in non-organic. Just to mention a few: spinach, strawberries, apples, potatoes.🍓🍎🥔
You can always access the Clean Fifteen and Dirty Dozen list from the official ewg.org website.
