When we bought this house I became obsessed with finding period furniture. And I mean obsessed. The hubbs is probably shaking his head in affirmation right now. Not a week went by that I didn't see something new that I..ABSOLUTELY...HAD...TO...HAVE....And then he put me on a budget (which I welcome because I am horrible with money...I mean horrible) and let me tell you, you guys, when you are on a budget you double and triple question every decision and think several times before you purchase an item. For example, I went to the architectural warehouse today and left with nothing because did I really love that pair of candelabras at 50% off? Why, yes, I did...but did they really bring me joy?? It's like walking around with a tiny Marie Kondo in my wallet....Anyway...before I was put in said budget I spotted this chair at the Salvation Army. It's not Victorian by any means, it's just a simple, relatively modern recliner but...BUT...look at the upholstery! Cigars and playing cards! I mentioned before, Mr. Minnich (the original owner) used to own a cigar factory, J.W Minnich and Son...and the library in the house was designed with card playing in mind. The shelves and fireplace have card suits carved in them and, we were told, there was a lot of gambling happening in this room, so how could I NOT purchase it?? This chair was meant to be in this house!! (And at less than $20 for a Lane recliner? Yes, please). So, I have come to the conclusion that, if it's meant to be, the right piece will find you...

I woke up early this morning and scrubbed all the overnight goop off. Then I used the After Cleaner. And that is it.
We did not stain.
We did not re-varnish. We did not sand it. We did not oil it.
We stripped the old paint off and left it alone. 🚪
Obviously, I still have to do the right side window and the front window. We also plan to do the large window in the dining room because both rooms are open to each other.
So I don’t want to do any staining or oiling until all of the windows have been stripped. Because I want them to have a consistent finished when we’re done. 🖼
I posted the videos I took during in my stories. There are also product pictures (if you’re interested in what we used) posted in my stories.
Slowwwwly but surely we are starting to get a few house projects done! And when I say “we,” I mean Dave (ask him about the time I ordered the wrong size blinds, and he had to saw them all down by hand), and my parents when they visited over Christmas 😆 my mom spent an entire day turning the girls’ dream of a pink room into reality, and my dad installed these book shelves (they’re actually Ikea picture ledges....thank you Pinterest). I plan to rotate the ones on display out every few weeks. It’s amazing how much cozier and like “home” their room feels now. Thanks Mom and Dad! 💕#slapdashathome
week 4 challenge is hardware. All of the beautiful, detail filled hardware in our home is trapped in paint. I shared the multiple styles of knobs and the pretty window locks and lifts the other day. Door #1
of nine, is on the way to revival and these are the hinges.

The perfect Sunday. Stripping paint and football to look forward to later.... I even remembered put a pot of chili on first this this morning.
I’ve got the windows open and there is a lovely breeze.
Hope you are all having a good day too! I’ll keep you posted on our progress today in my stories. I’ll add to them as progress occurs.
No real earth shattering news or interesting house find or fact today. Just popping by to say - Y’all, this does not suck.
Not pictured - hours of digging our cars out of heavy freezing snow piles first thing this morning before these sub zero temps move in because it decided to change to freezing rain very early this morning and make 6-8 ish inches of actual snow feel like 20 (read: supremely unimpressed #snowstormharper
I have earned this coffee and fire side moment!
Also not pictured - an entire family’s snow gear usually in front of the fire on days like today because they are currently outside trying to build snow people or animals or forts - one can never be sure. 💙❄️⛄️☕️🔥 #snowday #coffee #fire

It doesn’t look like much, but these are the plank floors we found upstairs while prepping for some invasive upcoming work. (There used to be ‘70s shag carpet up here.) It remains to be seen whether or not we will be able to use them (they’re in great condition from what we’ve uncovered so far, but we have a lot left to uncover and we don’t assume anything in this house anymore) but it is EXCITING to uncover something good for a change 😂 and would definitely be cheaper and look better than our plans of adding new flooring up here! Fingers crossed for NO surprises!
Oooh. Aaah.... Ok. So it isn't the most interesting thing you'll see in your feed today, but it is an important step. How's your Saturday going?
The Citrustrip did a good job in the 16 hours it had to soak off the thick layers of paint. These hinges have more detail than what was visible through the paint and I spent a number of hours picking at those nooks and crannies until this thrift store crock pot came home. Vinegar has always been a go to, in this house, for just about every job known to man. Today it gets to soak these beauties to their naked, original glory! .

Whew. Just made it on the week three #homeportrait
challenge for #52weeksofhome
. If you’re just popping by then you likely haven’t seen the post where we talk about how the exterior of our home is currently the roughest looking part of our house. Cannot wait for Spring to arrive so we can begin prepping to paint this beauty. But alas, we are prepping for a snowstorm and enjoying the work we’ve been doing inside. ❤️🏚
Not that we need another project... but this happened.
As most of you know many of our projects have been out of our scope of capability and we’ve had electricians and plumbers do a lot of the big jobs. The things we thought we could handle on our own, we have done ourselves. (And for sure the woodwork was on our radar.) However, we weren’t intending to start it until after some of the current projects were totally complete. (I.e. the kitchen.) 🏚
But as these things generally happen, one thing led to another, and this is where we’re at. It all started when I noticed on the underside of the mantle I still had a command hook left from Christmas. When I removed it I noticed that the paint underneath had blistered slightly. I literally could not help myself and peeled it. The paint just started coming off so easily. We realized that the mantle had such a nice coat of varnish on it that the cheap latex paint that they slapped over it was going to be easier to get off than we had thought. 🏚
So, we went for it! This is one days worth of effort. We did do it all by hand so far. For this part we decided not to use a sander or sandpaper and not use any harsh chemicals. We just used a little bit of Murphy’s oil soap when we needed to smooth things out.
Phase 2 will probably need chemical intervention. 🏚
Unfortunately my husband is very busy for the next couple of days so we probably will not get back to this until the weekend. Because we really had no intention of starting this project the timing is awful. But, I can’t help but smile when I look at it. 🏚
Also before you ask .... Yes yes yes yes! We absolutely intend to do the windows on either side of the mantle next. This is all new to us, so we are going to do one thing at a time. I felt like doing the windows simultaneously would be overwhelming for me. But we will start them immediately after completing the mantle. *There are a couple of videos in my stories of us peeling paint if you’re interested.
Only 248 days until autumn. Hang in there, creepies! 🍂💀

This kitchen has literally taken our blood, sweat, and tears to get to this point. It’s not exactly done (note the missing trim and the awkward wire) BUT it’s close! So much closer than it used to be! (Swipe to see some progress shots!) Tomorrow we have an electrician coming to investigate some issues we uncovered that have been holding up progress on any other parts of the house, and hopefully give us some answers and solutions that won’t cost our entire life savings. (🤞 everybody cross your fingers and say a little prayer for us!) And then we can get back to the fun stuff soon!
Hello there, my IG friends! It's time for another #52weeksofhome
photograph! This week we are looking at "House Portraits", and since I have already shown you pictures of the exterior I wanted to show you something different instead. The first picture is an illustration of what the house would have looked like back in the day when cars were still merely an idea in Henry Ford's head. This illustration is very similar to what the house loosk like today. The second picture is a portrait of the inhabitants of the house. For reference, they are sitting in the stairs where the horse's butt is 😁 Now, here is a dose of reality for you...you see that white, pristine, exterior color? Yeah...about that....that color was wonderful at a time when only horses were on the road. Nowadays and, being on Main St with the constant traffic of cars and 18 wheelers, the house is covered in soot from the exhausts. Because of this we had to make the painful but realistic decision to paint the house. Yes, I love it white. Historically, it has always been white, but I hate to see the white turn gray over and over, it's just impossible to maintain. Hopefully, if all goes as planned, come Spring/Summer she will get a facelift and a much needed fresh coat of paint in a color that will mask soot as much as possible so she can always look her best...
