There was a time, not so long ago, when I decided to make social media a priority. It was my goal to create an instagram page where I could help influence women as well as bring in some extra income for my family.
What I didn’t count on was social media influencing me.
I found being on my iPhone was taking precedence over being with my family, enjoying the outdoors, and building genuine face-to-face friendships.
What I need is a time-out and that’s where this #NoPhoneforaYear #contest
I want to be present. To BE more and scroll less.
What would I do with my time? That’s easy.
I’m a cancer survivor. I was diagnosed with choroidal melanoma 5 years ago when I was 23. The lessons and hardships of that time stick with me.
I know what it’s like to wonder if you’ll have enough money to cover your treatments. I understand the struggle of deciding what foods to eat/what to avoid. Of trying every tip and trick that someone’s brother-in-law’s great uncle Harry told them is supposed to kill cancer.
And I know what it’s like to expect NOT to live.
I understand this. And I hate that anyone has to go through it. What I want is to help make it easier for people who do.
So that brings me to what I’d do with all my time.
I’d start a fruit orchard. In fact, I’ve already planted 12 trees [and believe me, it’s time consuming 😳], but I want to do more. I want our small farm to be a place where I can invite those who are struggling with cancer to come harvest some nutritious food, free of charge. I want to help lift people’s spirits.
And I can’t accomplish all of this on my IPhone.
So it’s time for me to ditch the phone, and get to work. There are trees to be planted, fences to be mended, and orchards to be visited.
It might not be easy, but it will absolutely be worth it.

If I’m chosen I promise I won’t touch an iPhone for a year.
I further vow that I will not spend the prize money on booz and lascivious living. Instead, I will use it to help kick start our hobby farm/orchard. 🍎🌳🍐🍃🍒🌱🍏🌿🍓
