Another great coaching day with Burton Mutual Angling Association, assisting some young (and some not so young) anglers at the start of their adventure.
These days are oddly bittersweet for me; I love seeing these kids catch fish, and the enthusiasm and desire they show is totally inspiring.
On the other hand there's the shadow looming over angling- fewer young participants and far fewer rod licenses sold.
We can blame the Xbox, or the weather, or the parents, or the economic climate, but ultimately the blame lays with the industry. I'm yet to meet a youngster who doesn't have an instinctive fascination with aquatic environments, I think it's ingrained in us all. I've met plenty who haven't been given the opportunity to fish though, and therein lies the problem.
My solution? More open days, more coaching days, more coaches, more marketing at grass roots level and more money from within the industry. We can't rely on funding from the EA, we're going to have to fix this ourselves.
Huge congrats on your tench, Lucy. May it get bigger and bigger every time it's mentioned! 🎣🎣🎣
