On this day in 1915 after 9 months of fighting British, Australian and New Zealand forces began withdrawing from the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. The original plan was to capture the Ottoman capital of Constantinople, however the Allies wouldnt get much further than the beach. The campaign was a disaster and humiliation for the allies with 187,000 casualties on the allied side. The disaster also forced Winston Churchill who orchestrated the campaign to resign his post as first sea Lord, he then went onto command an infantry battalion on the western front. The failure of this operation created a belief that amphibious assaults wouldn't work against modern defences, a belief that wouldn't be shaken until D-day, 6th of June in 1944.
